You need to brush the cat daily. I had this problem with my two cats(one is a long hair) until I started brushing daily.

You go to a pet store and purchase a cat shampoo and some brushes (particularily a slicker brush). This cleans your cat and removes the dead hair. Brush regularily. I brush my cat daily and she's a long hair, no hair problems here and my cat loves me!

Particularly if it's a long-haired cat, you should brush it with a soft brush daily.
