Always be aware of yer surroundings. At any point in time, there may be a need to find and utilize an improv weapon or defense. That being said make sure you can take in the area and watch your opponent for any tactical advantage you may be able to pull by luring him or forcing him into any one part of your given "arena."

NEVER FIGHT WITH ANY EMOTION. AND ALWAYS FIGHT WITH THE MINDSET, "SURVIVE OR DIE". A true warrior knows that human emotion will create turmoil and exploit weakness in battle. Always separate your psyche from the situation. You need your intellect, your reflex, your eyes and ears to survive nothing else. If you go into battle with a goal, or pride as a motivator, that will overwhelm your thinking in the fight. It will be the primary concern. Close out your humanity, b/c if you truly need to fight, the one thing that will keep you going at your fullest is the constant thought of impending death, even if it isn't realistic. If you are good enough you can find a zone of sorts that is separate from everything you are, and even that will help you.

Stay mobile. A moving target means that your opponent will constantly need to shift to keep his guard. And don't always assume that hard offense is the most effective offense. Retreat can give you the time and space needed to watch and gather momentum in order to exploit the other fighters weakness.

Finally in battle, nothing is unacceptable. You need to realize that in the end, no matter who looks at you funny, if you won, that's that. Don't be afraid to hit and back off. Don't concern yourself with what others might call a wuss move or whatever else. In this day and age honor leaves the battle as soon two or more combatants engage, the taunting remnants of ancient chivalry will always either come from the loser, or those who would not fight. Know the difference between the need to fight, and the desire to preserve ones pride and reputation. The truly dishonorable act comes of fighting an unworthy opponent who likes to wag his his tongue. If you put yer all into him, you are just as cowardly.

Good fighting tactics? How about the best: DON'T.
Nine times out of 10 getting into a fight is all mental. Find a way you don't have to and make darn sure you're ready for the tenth.

The best tactic I can think of is to Relax. I know the adrenaline is surging but once it goes down, the gas tank is gone and you crash. Then the poor judgement can kick in.

Another good tactic is to have confidence in yourself and your training. Like others have pointed out, fighting/sparring/competiting is more mental than anything. But also don't get too arrogant because your opponent might know more than he/she lets on.

I'll assume you're talking about a street fight. A few great techniques, if you don't mind fighting "dirty" are to kick the guy in the nuts so hard his kids are crying, stomp on his foot so hard you break every damn bone in it, kick him straight on in the knee cap, or give him a quick shot and take off a running...depending on if you're fighting because you want to, or because you're cornerd.

A well placed kick to the knee, a jab to the throat. If you have nails you can dig those into the underside of the wrists. Also you can divert their attention. Like pretend to punch with one hand, and then use the other, or kick. Grabbing their hair works if it's long enough.

Hit the acupoints. Some of them are the temple, between the left eye and the nose, and the sides of the lower neck.

Speed, and make sure that each block is also a strike. Make sure that you hit the eyes and throat routinely while striking to the face and soft-tissue. Groin shots, stomach kicks, knee breaks also work well.

in the ring? on the mat? or in the street?

it depends on your abilities - speed, strength, skills

your opponent

and the situation

in the street anything goes - try to sucker punch the dude or reach out to shake his hand as a start to the fight - grab it pull him in and head butt his eyebrow - dont be afraid to bite - I bit a guys lip half off and that stopped him dead

punch, kick, knee or twist and rip his balls - that also slows him down
