Kapil T, though i'd love to own a winery. I'm now looking for homebrewing in the basement of a modest home.
I'd like average costs of ingrediants per gallon.

no. it is actually very cheap. a basic wine or beer starters kit is around $50.00. the actually ingredients are very cheap, and you can reuse bottles over and over again for containers. it is really a fun hobby and fairly inexpensive. fyi...you may want to get a brewers guide. it helps a lot.

Beer, I do not know. Wine. That can vary so much. Do you want to use plastic jugs or invest in 10 gallon glass jugs. I used plastic 10 gallon jugs. (maybe $10 per jug). It depends what wines you will make. If you want the expensive grapes--sending away for the right type to make the wine?? I used some home grown mint. Also used unpasteurized apple cider--bought locally. I used frozen grape juice. I used home grown grapes. It depends what you want to make your wine from. So the price depends on you. Good luck and good drinking.

great theory. I do the two. examine up first, earlier paying for any aspects on kit. you won't be able to do plenty greater useful than Papazian on beer or Berry on wine, besides the actuality that the "For Dummies" books are notably stable. initiate with a undemanding kit. you would be waiting to get a stable deal on eBay or at a flea marketplace or storage sale. you are able to upload refinements later. If there's a homebrew keep interior of reach, you're golden. you will get stable suggestion from the owner, who will see you as a ability repeat shopper, in case your first batch is stable. He might initiate you out on a wine kit or an all-extract ale. concerning to the only element on which I disagree with previous posters is that's greater common. Wine is a little greater forgiving than beer via fact of its acidity. do merely no longer initiate with a lager till you have greater adventure.

I brew my own beer and the cost is not that bad. Usually, I spend about $30-$40 per 5 gallon batch. 5 gallons will net you about 4 cases of 12 ounce beer. Starting out you will spend $50 -$100 on equipment and supplies.

Oh dear. There are so many intangibles in this question.
Unless you have access to fresh grapes you are not really making wine -- you are converting condensed grape juice in cans into something alcoholic.
There is a world of excellent real wine at low cost available from your local wine shop. Why save a few cents making inferior stuff your best friends won't want to drink?

It's only illegal to make wine without a license if you sell it. The cost will depend on the type of containers you use, what kind of fruit you'll be using and whether or not you grow it yourself, your source and cost of bulk yeast, and your cost of sugar.

It might be a question of quality, but people make booze in jail for nothing. I included a link for jail-made hooch for your convenience.
