You mean of course that we are following "the letter of the law" instead of the spirit behind it. Look in any newspaper and see every day that the "law" is stagnant, perverse, and self-serving. Rapists and murderers are given lighter sentences than thieves and tax evaders, people fight off frivolous lawsuits filed by gold digging opportunists - and do not recoup their court costs even if they do win, children are allowed to remain in abusive homes, you look for it, it's there. Our society has gotten so bogged down in bureacracy and political correctness that it is almost impossible to receive justice. In this sense our legal system is Landru - a blind machine grinding out the "status quo" while mashing the individual underneath. Am I saying that our legal system needs to be done away with? Not really, but it does need to be stripped down and rethought with punishments fitting not only the crime, but also the situation. For instance, two thieves in separate robberies steal $200. Do they get the same sentence? What if thief A is stealing to feed a crack habit, while thief B is stealing to feed a hungry family because she cannot find work? Justice can no longer be allowed to be, like Landru, blind.

Yes,

Unfortunately everyone thinks they are James T. Kirk and they can get someone to change their lifestyle and accept "a savior/prophet" because they have "misinterpreted" something.

Let's pull this one further out though.
Beta III, could this be where the Betazoids came from?
If so, the Kirk did something that resulted in a truly superior peaceful race of people.

Otherwise he left them high and dry without Landru, and we are left wondering what happened to the Betans.....

Dammit Jim....the link is dead!

I think there are good lessons in all of Star Trek episodes...just don't wear your underwear backward around Mr. Sulu!

Your link is broken, but any good fiction parallels life - science fiction, too.
