Mary was a virgin. According to the New Testament, Joseph apparently heard the revelation and believed it as well.
In the Quran, the angel Gabriel blew into Mary's sleeve and she became pregnant, and had a child. When she brought her son back home, the villagers became angry and accused her of fornication out of wedlock. Miraculously, the baby Jesus began to speak to them in their language, saying that she was innocent and he was a miracle from God.

The Church has to deal with a more educated population. What was believable then is more descriptive in the word gullible. Stories of the Bible are under study by researchers and the Film Industry. Tearing apart the myths sells advertising slots.

To get more serious than this question warrants...lol...the "Virgin Birth" legend was probably incorporated into christianity at its inception as part of the effort to synthesize the dogmas of the various competing pagan cults into the new "state religion." Old paganism is literally chock-full of stories of gods born of virgins who fooled around with divine animals of various kinds - in Mary's case, Jehovah in the form of a dove.

I wonder if a Catholic nun ever got pregnant and then claimed that she was the Virgin Mary reincarnated. You should see this story in the tabloids any day now.

I suspect the virgin birth story was added long long after Jesus allegedly died. It was likely copied from previous religions like Horus.

Of course. Besides, I think there was a translation error, and she was just a young woman.
Edit: I mean of course she WASN'T a virgin.
