Hi,
Dogs that follow their owners around the house are usually doing that because of the lack of exercise. Your pooch sounds frustrated and she is trying to tell you: "Come on! I'm here! Take me for a walk and let's explore the neighborhood togeteher!":). Their energy needs to go SOMEWHERE and if it is not drained in a positive way (like by regular long walks, exercise, running) it goes into something negative (escaping the house in this case). Dogs are opportunists and if they are not getting what they need (walks, exercise) they will try to figure out a way to get it on their own. Your dog does not run FROM you - she runs away from a kennel (which a house is from a dog's point of view - no matter how big and fancy a house is). She's only trying to get what she misses in her life... Try exercising her more on a regular basis and you will see a big difference. I don't know what energy level your dog is, but they all love walks, exploring the area, smelling things and simply following their instincts...When you give her a lot of exercise you'll notice that she'll get into this calm state of mind when she'll just enjoy lying down and resting at home. She won't be restless and temted to escape.
Another thing is that you can teach her a stay command and place command and make sure that you know that she either stays where you tell her to while opening the door or that she goes to her place.
You don't want your beloved pooch to get into some trouble by escaping and be hit by a car, etc.
I hope this helps. Good luck with your doggie and feel free to email me if you have any questions!:)

Well, even though he got stuck with the chihuahua she will still put off a scent. My dachshund got stuck twice and then I thought she was through and i had brought her over to my grandmother's house and they got stuck again. Yes, dog's do act like this when female's are in heat and it's normal. One of my grandmother's old dachshunds would never eat or play he would just whine at the window and he would get very skinny to the point where they would have to try to force him to eat something and I do not mean shoving it down his throat or anything but they had to find some way to feed him. He would also roam far from home and always came back, but they lived in the middle of no where at the time with only a few neighbors and they didn't live near any busy roads or anything. He'd stay outside for a while. If there isn't any dogs that are in heat then I'd be worried and take him to a vet.

Don't take it personally. Dogs do this. Especially if they smell something.
My dog who is treated like a queen(!) will run away as soon as she can get free or if her leash comes off, etc. And then I chase her and when I get near her, she starts running again. Once I chased her for 3 miles......
She gets three walks a day, so she is not needing to be outside. Some dogs just roam.
Was she a stray before you got her? That also makes it worse.
I used to cry all the time when this happened, but I know its just in the dog's nature to run. Don't worry! Just make sure you get her back and that she doesn't get hit by a car!!!

I don't know what breed you have, but certain breeds have a hunting instinct, that love to hunt and explore! Mine is half German Shepherd, and half Akita, and I don't dare turn him loose! He will not hurt anyone, but if he sees a squirrel, rabbit, cat, or other small wild animal, it better be able to out run him! Even some small dogs just like to explore, or smell around for different scents. Some people are lucky and have their dogs stay in their yard without a fence, but mine is not one of them!

my dog used to do the same thing until she got old. She probably just wants to explore the out side. take your dog for a walk more often and she will try to escape less often. My dog Precious was 19, R.I.P. 7/09/06

She may need more exercise than you are giving her. And maybe she is just playful and feels it is great fun making you chase her, Miss personality.

Maybe she is hinting that she wants you to take her out for a walk.
