And there's another myth about sugar. We hear this one from parents all the time. Sugar drives the kids crazy.
Even some of the kids believe it.
"I go really nuts when I have candy," one girl said.
And it doesn't matter how old you are.
"You get really — hyper! … I'm like oh, I'm on such a sugar rush right now," a teenage girl said.
Lots of people accept the idea that too much sugar makes kids wild and hyper. But is it true?
"The research is very clear. Sugar does not make a child hyperactive," Nonas said.
Many studies have found that. One published in the New England Journal of Medicine gave some kids sugared foods and others foods with artificial sweeteners.
Their parents and the researchers didn't know who was eating sugar and who wasn't. They monitored the kids for things like irritability and hyperactivity. They found no difference.
"There is no such thing as a sugar high. And there is no such thing as sugar making you nuts. There just isn't," said Nonas.
But I've seen kids go crazy at parties. Isn't that because the sugar kicks in?
Actually, no. And some of their moms have figured out what's going on.
"The kids are hyper! They are hyper because they are excited. Because they have freedom. Because there are 20 kids, crowding around each other," said insightful mom Hillari Boritz.
Right, because it's a party!
The studies also show that if food has an effect, it could be the caffeine in chocolate and soda that's giving you the buzz. It's not the sugar.

Sugar does not make you hyper, what could be making people hyper is the chemicals or additives in the food! Sugar in it's natural state may give you a bit more energy but in no way should it make you hyper, if it does, you may have trouble processing sugars and need to go get tested.

No sugar does not make you hyper it is in fact just a mental thing unless of course you have a medical condition that gives you a sensitivity to sugar, however, most cases of "sugar highs" are really just a mental stimulus. People being told for years that sugar makes you hyper and nuts has had a serious mental placebo effect.

It really depends on how your body responds to sugar. Some people get hyper from it and some people don't. Some people even get sleepy when they eat it. Everyone's body is different. ME- It varies, depending on the time of day or what I may have eaten that day. For example, I don't eat it at night before I go to bed because it gives me the shakes really bad and I can't sleep until they go away. If I eat a light but filling meal (usually around lunch time), and then drink a soda or two with a candy bar, I'm wired for the day, until I'm hungry, then I drop like bomb. If I eat much of it in the morning, I get extremely tired. It seems to put a dent in my attention span. Maybe that's what it really does to people.

"refined sugars and carbohydrates enter the bloodstream quickly, they produce rapid fluctuations in blood glucose levels ... [which] might trigger adrenaline and make a child more active."
YET: "`No one has shown a relationship between dietary factors and behavior." The article speculates that parents may be confused by the fact that many sugared foods and beverages also contain caffeine, a well-known stimulant even for adults.
So, food gives you energy, and since sugars and carbs enter your system quicker, it seems like you are suddenly more energetic and "hyper."
If you google for "sugar and hyper" everything you find will say that sugar making kids hyper is a myth.

Processed sugars like those in candy bars will give you a false sense of energy or a high(hyper), but you come off of it quick and it makes you tired. If one eats a natural sugar like an apple, the energy or high will last longer and you come down much slower. So yes, sugar will make you hyper!
