Tash in not quite correct, that kick has been around for longer than Pat Morita has been alive.
The crane kick is effective, just not used in the way that anyone thinks. The crane kick is a form, and you do not fight with form. Form teaches you something else. Form teaches perfect balance, if you don't do the form correctly, your balance is off and the power of the kick is lost.
Now. . . let me give you a mental picture. . . (this is merely an example of other scenarios where a Crane kick might create itself, do not think of it as a "technique" in its own right)
Rather than try the Crane kick as seen in the movie, think of it in a multiple attacker situation. One man holding each arm with someone charging from the front. The two men holding your arms can create a stabilizing effect where the kick can generate more force.
Again, this is a theoretical situation where, because you trained your body with the proper form, your body will recognize the situation and react with the appropriate force.

Only in very limited circumstances. Also a jumping front kick as done in Hollywood is not traditionally how it is to be performed. It is really a double kick, the first kick propels you forward the second kick is also forward. The whole kick is used to move forward with authority not to jump up in the air and kick someone from Cobra kai dojo.

the actor pat morito actually created the crane kick for the movie it isn't a kick in any style traditionally due to the lack of balance.you would not get a great deal of power due to this fact.

Yes, it's effective if you can pull it off. Don't make it look so obvious you're about to kick though. Bring attention to the upper body. You know, or kick to the groin to make him bend over first, then POW! Right in the kissa.

pssh, not in the way they do it in the movie! lol, in the time it takes someone to do their little preparation and kick thing I'd be grabbing their foot and holding on until they fall over! lol, that's what I do to my brother, but he doesn't try to do the crane kick.. He tries to step on me! lol

I have been to martial arts tournament, I have never seen anyone try to use it. I have sparred with many different fighters and have never seen it used. Most fancey kicks don't work unless your very fast and very very good. So I would say no it doesn't work.
