I know it says on the bottle "No added sugar" but I get the feeling it will still rot their teeth. My mother in law insists on giving it to my 2 year old son as he thinks he is a "big boy" drinking it from the bottle but I usually only give him very dilute squash or water. What do other parents think?

Jam123 - if you read the question you will see that I give him very dilute squash or water. I also give him pure orange juice.

Although it says on the label that there are no added sugars, it is still very high in natural sugars. Letting him drink it from the bottle is fine. If you continue to do what you are doing and ask that your mother in law only give's him one occassionally then there shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure that you brush his teeth twice a day.

I'd be much more worried about a no-added-sugar drink than a sugary variety. At least sugar is a natural human food - aspartame is manufactured.

Don't worry about it rotting his teeth, as long as he brushes his teeth twice a day and doesn't go to sleep with a bottle of Ribena or something he should be fine.

I only give my four year old water or milk. She sometimes enjoys diluted fresh orange juice. When we go out she has a sports-cap bottle of water and she's fine with that. She seems to treat fizzy drinks with suspicion :)

However, having said that, I grew up on a diet of squash and sweets and have all my own teeth, no fillings and am normal weight. So I suppose it's possible to worry too much. A Fruit Shoot every so often won't hurt him.

Fruit Shoot Sugar Content

What's wrong with just water? Sugar substitutes are worth than sugar. Buying all those expensive juices help your child develop a taste for sugar. I used to give my child diluted squash but now and by her own choice she just drinks water. We've talked together from a very young age about how food works in and for the body and how each one of us has to take care of ourselves.

My daughter was the same but I chose not to give her Fruit Shoot. I bought a juice bottle, the same principle as the Fruit Shoot bottle, and put dilute juice in it. They are about £1.99 from the chemist, she also has the tommee tippee juice bottle, it's a new bottle with a non spill spill straw that folds away. She loves them both and doesn't bother about the sugar filled drink bottles anymore. Hope this helps!

I personally hate the stuff - it hits my throat and makes me cough for ages. I never have a problem with any other drink. Anyway, to answer your question - NO ADDED SUGAR means just that, HOWEVER it doesn't mean that it has no natural sugars in it. With Robinsons Fruit Shoot, I very much doubt the label is honest, as I never have such a strange reaction to any drink - and I am an adult. I would stick to the old fashioned pure juice drink.

My daughter has them round my ex mother in laws and she loves them and it dosn't seem to hurt her but I dont buy them myself however Psychoticangel makes a good point. When the bottle is sent back with a little bit left in the bottle I clean it out and fill it up with fruit juice or my own cordial.

Its the bottle that they enjoy not the drink I find that out when I buy a bottle of water from the shop my little one cant get enough and its only water!!

If it bothers you then you should tell her as he is your child and she should respect your wishes!

Give him diluted real orange juice instead. Even the cheapest "from concentrate" is better than a drink stuffed full of additives.

I steer clear of anything with 'no added sugar' I agree with the poster who said Aspartame is a brain cell killer. I avoid it where possible. So I don't think Fruit Shoot will rot their teeth but it might rot their brain! I think you are right to tell your MIL not to give it to him. Save it only for special occasions.

Once in a while is okay, but they tend to pack it full of sweeteners rather than use sugar, which gives them the right to claim that there is no added sugar- true, but there is added sweeteners and additives which they don't tell you about until the fine print!
If you're worried about his teeth, just clean them when he's finished :)
