You know the people that (for whatever reason) love to say or do anything just to disprove or discredit the religion. I mean the no mistake about it, obvious, haters.

Do you trust people like that?

What if it's about a religion you might already think is odd?

thanks

(clarification - I don't mean a religion that never bothered anyone, I mean a religion that never got bothered).

Given free will, I doubt there is anything in existence that doesn't have some enemies. Religion is about such fundamental stuff - how to live, the meaning of life - that it is bound to have enemies...and each religion has its own haters - but like I say even a Mars Bar has enemies, there are people who wish they were never invented and hate them.

As for specific individuals that are contrary, no I don't agree with that attitude and I certainly don't trust them. I am a philosophy student, and have to study many ideas about life that I don't agree with - but that is no excuse for being a biggot and just counting them as rubbish just because I don't like them/agree with them. I am required to find fault when possible in particular philosophies, but I would never find fault at any cost - only if there was a real problem in the philosophical concept itself. And then I always present my criticisms in a respectful manner. I invite people to discuss my views, that is present pros and cons, and find ways of working out the issues. I enjoy that. I have strong views - I'm not a wishy washy liberal who accepts everything as true, and nothing false. Still, I believe 'truth' exists, and I want to find it, and at this minute I think I have found it. But I accept I may be wrong, so I always listen to others and invite their views.

The 'haters' you talk about are biggots - they are proud people who are not interested in finding truth, they just want to crush those who don't agree with their own ideas. You never find them willing to discuss their theories - they only ever lecture you to make you like them.

First, if you encounter a "hater" (as you put it) who is trying to disprove or discredit your religion, then perhaps you should consider educating yourself more on your own religion. Honest debate and discussion on a subject you feel strongly about should serve to make your beliefs stronger.

In the end, though, they cannot disprove or discredit the religion as a whole because religions opperate off of faith, not reason or logic. Therefore if you believe in that religion, then that is a good enough answer. The fact that you believe is reason enough to simply ignore the "haters."

Secondly, I don't see why raising objections to a certain religion makes a person untrustworthy. They are simply seeking the same thing that we are all seeking - answers.

Third, there is no religion that doesn't have some detractors of it. So, if you're trying to find a religion where you will not have to defend those beliefs - good luck.

Last, if you already think a religion is odd or unbelievable then you don't have to follow it or believe in it. You should only believe in that which you actually can.

Interesting question!

"Buddhists were briefly persecuted under the Zoroastrian priest-king Kirder." (from Wikipedia) Quakers (society of friends) were persecuted too. Even the peaceful religions have been attacked at some point. I think that it doesn't matter what your beliefs are - when certain people come to power, they will persecute anyone who doesn't practice the religion of their choice. So I don't think any religion has been completely free from persecution. Unless it was very small and isolated and the people never got conquered by outsiders with a different religion...

Do I trust haters? No. But it becomes a fuzzy area when the religion begins to impose it's beliefs on others. Like I might hate someone who lynched black people or as part of their religion. I hate to see gay people discriminated against.

The Bible indicates that those who love Jesus will be hated by the world in general. Jesus said He has sheep in many different folds(religions).
