Get some 'good' cleaning fluid (the type to clean animals ears obviously) and clean gentle as far as your finger will allow with a cotton wool ball.
Whatever you do, don't go sticking cotton buds into the ear canal as this may well damage it and cost you a fortune in vets fees.

Dogs ears shouldn't SMELL.
If they do it could be a sign of an ear infection or ear mites. Both require veterinary attention.
If his hearing is affected the ears must be so badly bunged up that only a Vet should be treating them. If they aren't bunged up then an infection in his middle ear could be the cause - this will be painful and could cause permanent damage to his hearing if not treated.
Take him to the Vet - get his ears seen to and then ask your Vet how to keep them clean in future.
The ear is a delicate organ. Do not use home remedies - get professional advice.

A dogs ears are not like a humans. You can go to any retail pet store and buy ear cleaning solution. You will not rupture an ear drum no matter how much you wipe. You may have to take the dog to the vet if there are signs of infection. Perhaps at this time that is a good Idea, since you just got this dog and it wasn't cared for properly. The vet will give you instructions how to do it in the future.

If the dog has never had an ear cleaning, you may need another person to hold him while you clean. Get the ear cleaning solution from the vet (it's not very expensive). I like to use the round cottom make-up remover pads instead of cotton balls-they work better. Put some solution on the pad and stand behind the dog and lift his ear, put your hand down to clean. (Their ear canal is longer than you think.) The dog may have an ear infection, so if there is a lot of black goopy stuff and it really smells, he may have an ear infection which will require drops. You still need to clean the ears before doing to drops but be gentle because his ears will be sore and hot if he has an infection. Good luck!

If you've never cleaned his ears before, you should have him checked for infection before you do anything yourself. If there is an infection, the vet will prescribe something for it and show you how to apply it. If there isn't an infection, or after the infection clears up, buy a good ear cleaning solution and clean the ears as needed. I have a beagle who needs regular ear cleaning. I usually do it when she gets a bath.

you won't be able to sort the problem out by cleaning as it sounds like he has an ear infection and ear mites. You will need to take it to a vet to get proper treatment. Do not put any over the counter med's down the ear as it is has an infection the pain of over the counter med's will drive it crazy.

Theres a special ear cleaning solution for dogs in a plastic bottle with a thin nozzle. You squirt a few drops in each ear and it foams up with all the gunk which it has softened. You dont have to do anything except wipe up the external area. Its also a mild antiseptic so if there is any infection it takes care of it. See if you can get it or ask your vet about it.

Go to your local pet store and get a ear cleaner or you can use 3/4 water and 1/4 vinegar , and use a cotton ball. Wet the cotton ball with the cleaner, and gently rub inside the ear in a circular motion. This will gently work the wax out, but if you say it has a smell, it could be ear mites or a yeast infection. I would clean the ears, but if the smell doesn't go away, then you may want to go to the vet and get antibiotics and a cleaner prescribed for these problems.

Ear, Here, Hear Anmar, I hope you are listening!Take your second hand St.Bernard to a vet for a first class complete check up.IMMEDIATELY. St Bernards are prone to ear infections due to their big ears. Let the vet establish whether there is a cause with an otoscope.because it could have picked up a mite, from the garden/park, or one of those horrible spikey bits of wild wheat. St bernards need a lot of grooming everyday because they are so big,
Merry festivities, and a healthy happy new year to one and all

Take your dog to the vet, have them do it and show you how to do it as well. Also, make sure that the dog does not have ear mites or an infection; both can cause deafness (as well as improperly cleaning them). They will also give you something to clean them with that is safe for doggie ears!
