For kin stuff i opt to propose Smilebox, it comes with alot of pre-formatted templates that are handy to administration. for extra expert slideshows i might recommend using a software like Articulate-it quite is helpful, in spite of the shown fact that does fee money after the 30 day trial.

iMovie and iDVD come with your Mac. Instructions are here:
http://www.apple.com/support/idvd/slideshow/
:)
Windows has something called "Movie Maker" that may also work.
Expensive programs like Microsoft Powerpoint can be avoided by using free software such as OpenOffice -
http://www.openoffice.org/
This can be used to produce a "presentation".

If you have Windows, there's the chance that you might have Windows Movie Maker. It's great for that kind of stuff.

PowerPoint will do it.
You might have to burn it as a VCD or SVCD so that it's playable on DVD players.
I'm not sure if PowerPoint can burn, or if it does how it works.
