I would surprise her, but let someone else in the family know (someone that won't spill the beans). This person could be reassuring your mom that you are fine and making her feel better.

My boyfriend was deployed to Kuwait for 6 months. He came home without telling me and surprised me and it was the greatest thing I have ever felt in my life. I can only imagine a mother being surprised by her son. Go for the surprise, it'd be great. I would stop all contact with her, if you talk to her. Good luck!! Show up on the front door step in your dress uniform!!

She have a strong heart? Then surprise her! I would also ask your army buddies and/or commanding officer what they think about it.
OK...I slightly alter my opinion after reading those that followed. I stay to still surprise her, but call her first to let her know you're alright, tell her you're coming home in a couple months, then show up a lot sooner when she's not expecting you. It'll still be a great surprise, but she'll at least be able to relax knowing you're alright.

Let momma know. Do not try to surprise the poor woman, as great as a surprise that will be BUT in this instance, tell her you're coming home!

I would call her two days before; I come home just to let her know that I am alright.
I then would tell her that I get a break in about two months, and I will be coming home.
On arrival day your mother will be surprised and happy to see you. It will be worth the call and the surprise.
Hang in the solider, and good luck to you out there.

We'll you can kinda do both. Let her know it's coming up but don't give her the exact time. Even a week earlier would be a great surprise. Us women we are good at worrying but we also like surprises. So if you can get it kinda in the middle you both win. Congrats on your return and thanks for your service.

As a Mom, I say tell her! But to be a surprise, you could tell her you're coming next month, but not necessarily when (ex.- if you're coming back the 10th, tell her the 20th for a surprise) BUT if she's a worrier, skip the surprise & tell her the date. (But you can surprise her with either flowers or something else.) You'll be surprise enough for her. ;)

Glad to hear your mom will have a good Christmas gift. I would surprise her so that you could never forget the look in her face when she sees you walk through the door. Just make sure she will be home.

You should know better! It depends on whether she likes surprises! But, if you see that she is starting worrying a lot, tell her!
