I am trying to locate a private function room for my friends 30th in central london (or nearish). We are having a masked ball so the venue ideally will be glam / plush / opulent / intimate. I am getting desperate as I have been looking and either can't find anything suitable or free. Private bar, dance floor with late license. I don't ask for much do I ;-)

Check out the fantastic private dining room at First Floor Portobello Road. It would be ideal for the event you describe.

I think trying to get something for free might be pushing it!!! If you are running a pub/function venue...you cannot let the room go for free as you cannot guarantee the number of people that will turn up, even if the person who throws the party expects 40/50 people... Hence the fee to cover expenses and also to cover any damages. Another party may want that evening...they would be charged the same fee...they might all turn up and spend money all night at the bar. Whereas another party may not spend much over the bar but because there has been a charge for the room, expenses are covered. Try the Alma...it's South...Wandsworth. It may be pretty busy at this time of year...worth a try.

Try The BBar in Victoria. It has a basement room with sofas and coffee tables for a relaxing atmosphere. The do require a deposit to book the room though, but you can also order a small buffet.

Or Pimlico Wine Vaults on the edge of Victoria - this is cheaper than the BBar but still plush. Food is nicer too. If you speak nicely to the staff behind te bar they will let you bring your own cds and se their cd player.

Do you mean free of charge or free as in available? Try the Connaught Rooms in Queen St Covent Garden otherwise a few places in the City might be available at the weekend.

ummmm well not sure whether this fits the bill below but extremely 'private', but also well apointed on the thames link (Elstree & Borehamwood) and it is carte blanche for you to do with what you want! Take a look, but sadly not free
Cheers!

Try the Royal Airforce Club in Picadilly. We have our annual 'old girls' reunion there and it is fabulous - I have posted a link to it for you.
