they are clean. rolling around in sand is one way they keep their coats clean. lions and tigers do it too. since your kitty cant find any sand, hes using the kitty litter instead.

Many animals will roll around in sand in order to clean thier coats. The sand helps remove some of the oil from thier coats/feathers. Maybe you should give your cat another box filled with only clean sand (like sand for a playground available at Home Depot or Lowes), or ask your local pet store for something suitable for a dust bath.

Did it come from the shelter? I see alot of kittens/cats that sleep in there at the shelter-maybe due to small cage. Otherwise, our cats love to roll in the dirt-kinda like getting a good massage...or they know you'll give them a good brushing after to get the litter/dirt off.

My kitten used to love that. You have to teach them not to do that. They think it's sand and it's fun to them but you have to show them that their bed is their bed and the litterbox is for poo.

The best way to do it is getting a hooded litterbox. Trust me, he/she won't want to do it in the enclosed box. Also it won't play in it as much, which is also good (not throwing litter around).

Good luck!
