I'm looking to buy my husband a new pistol for Christmas, but I'm unsure as to which brand/style he would like. I know that he said he would like a six shooter, but I'm not sure which brands are worth the money. I'm trying to spend less than $400. Any suggestions would be nice. Thank you in advance!

In my opinion, your hubby would like a western style revolver as he refers to a "six-shooter".You will not go wrong with a Ruger, either new or used. You may find a new one for your money, but you will certainly find a quality used specimen in that range, from a reputable dealer! The best caliber to purchase would be .44-.40Win. or .45Colt.I say this because he may later want a lever-action rifle in the same chambering. The western pioneers and cowhands did so to alleviate having to purchase or carry different cartridges. It makes perfect sense even in these times!I truly hope I have helped you,and to you and your's,a Merry Christmas and New Year. You need more information. What does he intend to use it for? If it is just for plinking, a .22 will be fine. If it is for self defense, he will need at least a .38. If he wants to hunt deer or hogs with it, he will need a .357 or .44 magnum. Does he own any handguns now? If so, what kind? You don't want to duplicate something he already has. How experienced is he with handguns? If he is a relative novice, he wil need something easy to handle.

Make sure you understand the terminology you are using. A "pistol" normally refers to a semi-automatic (auto-loading) handgun; a "six shooter" means a revolver, though the term "six shooter" is a bit archaic. By use of that term, he may mean he wants a "Western" style, single action revolver, but maybe not.

A $400 price tag limits your choices quite a bit, but you can get a Charter Arms (USA) or a Taurus (Brazil) .38 or .357 for that. Both companies make fine, reliable firearms, though not, of course, exactly first class.

Another for Ruger. Very awesome and accurate gun. I have shot my cousins .44 and it was accurate out of the box at 15 yards.
But the best thing to do is make sure he can handle it. Take him along with you and in most states he will have to purchase it himself because he will need an ownership card. Let him pick it out, just set his limit and tell him to have fun in the candy store ;).

OR, A black powder revolver is real fun. But I should note that it is not for personal or home protection. I have a 1861 steel frame Navy revolver. Fun to play with if he is a gun collector. Also if you get a .44 cal revolver it can be used during muzzleloading season(at least here in Michigan). I wouldn't use my .36 cal for hunting as I feel it would be unethical.

Ruger makes an excellent revolver in both single and double action,My single six 22 and super blackhawk are both accurate and reliable, you will be able to get a good piece for 400 clams,so that would be a good weapon for him.

A "six-shooter" is a type of gun called a "Revolver" and more specifically, an "Old west" Single Action type revolver.

The best brands in revolvers are Smith&wesson, Ruger and Colt. If it's in fact an "old west" type he likes, I recommend the Ruger line......

You will need to purchase from a firearms dealer. Check your local yellow pages for gun shops and ask a few questions. You should find one that can help.

I agree with John K. Let your husband pick out the gun that feels the best to him.

I would recommend a gift certificate from one of the gun shops.
That way you have something to wrap and he gets his choice of firearm.

Have a Merry Christmas

THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO TAKE HIM TO A GUNSHOP AND LET HIM PICK OUT THE ONE HE WANTS
GUNS ARE A VERY PERSONAL THING, ESPECIALLY A HANDGUN
IT HAS TO HAVE THE RIGHT FEEL
BELIEVE ME HE WILL BE HAPPIEST IF HE GETS WHAT HE WANTS
TAKE MY WORD FOR IT
