I want to bake a cake, but it seems that almost every cake I make, after a day or two it gets well.. not moist anymore. I keep the cake in a cake box but it still dosen't work. Does anybody know what I can add to my cakes to make them moist? I buy the cake mixes where you add eggs, water and oil. Would I need to add butter to make it moist? HELP!

If you are using a cake mix from a box, then make sure it says moist or pudding in the mix. If you are making from scratch, check your wet to dry ratio. If the cake seems dry when you are mixing, there isn't enough liquid.

Try adding a 1/4 cup of mayo or a 1/2 cup of apple sauce. If the recipe calls for butter, don't use margarine; use the real stuff. Also, don't over-beat the batter or cook the cake too long. If you don't want the edges to get too dry and crunchy, coat your cake pan with some crisco shortening or butter before you pour the batter in.

oh hon. first off, cake from a box wont stay moist for very long, it has too much...crap in it to be good. try making a simple cake from scratch. foodnetwork.com has awesome, easy recipes. also, when you put it in a cake box, add a couple of slices of bread to the box, to help keep moisture in. also, the cake may stay more moist in tupperware, or a sealed container. good luck!

You can add a boxed instant pudding to the batter, it will make it really moist. If you don't have boxed pudding on hand just add a little extra oil than what it calls for. (approx. a tablespoon or so) It will stay moist longer.

You could try adding a small box of instant pudding plus one extra egg to your mix. I also put a piece of plastic wrap over the cut part of the cake.

Adding friut juice such as orange or lemon to the mixture before baking can keep it moist. You could also try vanilla extract but you should only use a little.

Don't overbake it
Cool on a clean dishtowel rather than a wire rack
Cool completely before covering airtight
Consider refrigerating (wrap airtight) to extend the life.
