whats the big deal about Gaza?

I just want to know what is worth the bloodshed in Gaza? the area is very poor, lacks the basic needs and it is in the middle of the desert. Why doesnt Isreal just give the land back to Egypt and have it be their problem.

Egyptian soldiers are in Gaza at the request of Israel. The Egyptians have been shot at last week.
