I was on anti-depressants for 3 years but came off of them a few years ago. Lately I've been feeling depressed, irritable, and have anxiety like all the time and have been using alcohol and prescription meds. (Vicodin, Tylenol w/ Codiene) to make me feel good. But I have no health insurance or money to afford therapy or meds. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

You are self-medicating. It's what's in your head that is making you feel that way (although some may be chemical, mostly it is distorted thinking). Look up counselors in your area, most work on a sliding scale ($$ according to what you can pay). They can set you in the right direction.

If you want to try it on your own, do a lot of reading, which helped me change my way of thinking, which lifts my depression (and taught me to under-react to stressful situations, which eases the anxiety). If you have anxiety you are prone to blow things up out of proportion that really aren't that bad (I've done it all my life). Read "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway", "From Panic to Power", or go to midwestcenter.com (google Lucinda Bassett). That's where I learned the tools to get me off meds and handling things better, although it can be a struggle still. DONT self medicate...get out there and proactively help yourself. Best of luck.

Check out this site and get in touch with these people, then can help:

http://www.nami.org/

They can help you find a county mental health clinic that can get you medications for free or for a low price.

I also strongly agree about the 12 step meetings. I suggest checking out Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous. Millions of people have been helped by them and it is free and a good way to meet other people going through some of the same things you are.

In addition to the suggestion to go to the health center, if they determine you do need meds they can help you apply for a Patient Assistant Program, or PAP for short. These are programs through the pharmaceutical companies where they help people with low income get their meds for free.

But you can't take the meds with alcohol, vicodin, or coedine. So definitely get those out of your system.

are you planning to live the rest of your life using drugs?
maybe you need to use some other approach?
why are you depressed? this life is getting to you? take a relaxing vacation, go out with girlfriends, shop, find yourself a hobby, find someone who needs help and help them. do something in your life, don't hide behind the drug addiction, because this is a drug addiction, except the drugs you are wanting are legal.
