The purpose of the breadcrumbs is to absorb moisture and add some texture to the meatloaf. You can substitute bread, torn into tiny pieces. If you have any day old bisquits or rolls, that would work. Crackers will also be a reasonable substitute. Or, try using oatmeal (from the box), that might be the best of all.

Well, I don't use bread crumbs at all in my meatloaf. But you can use any cereal product (without sugar)--corn flakes, cheerios, etc. The best substittute is crackers. To crumb any of the above, place it in a heavy plastic bag and roll with a rolling pin. They crumb up really easily that way. (I use zippered freezer bags for this.)
When I make it, I don't use eggs and bread crumbs. Instead, I use cubed old cheddar cheese (about 4 oz)--makes it yummy.

I never put anything in my meatloaf but an egg and some seasonings. I like your onion soup mix idea, though!
You can crush up some toast for crumbs, or - like others here said - crushed crackers.

I save all fritos and totilla chip crumbs and use for meatloaf..tastes great..if you are in a bind, I'd just crush some up. crackers will work, also. If you are out of soup mix, Ranch dressing powder mix makes a great different taste. Just have fun, almost can't mess up a meatloaf.

If you have butter flavored crackers, like Keebler Club, those work well. If not use saltines, ritz, whatever type of cracker you have on hand. If you don't have any crackers on hand toast your own bread crumbs or try croutons.

Quick or reg oatmeal works well, as does any cracker/saltine, or even some cereals like corn flakes, crushed up. I have used all of them, and they work well. Your recipe sounds good!
