She'd probably really appreciate a carton of smokes (esp. now that they're getting to be more and more expensive). However, this is pretty tacky.

Candy never hurts (esp. since you say she's overweight). However, she may be trying to diet, so this wouldn't be such a great idea if this is the case.

If I were you, I'd go with a gift card. That way, she can buy what she wants. If you know that she prefers to shop at a certain store (Macy's, Lord & Taylor, etc.) get one from there. If no, I'd go with Target. Everyone loves Target. :)

Did you get her on a Pollyanna? I'd play it safe with a gift card. Her female co-workers (if there are any) could help point you to the right store. That way you couldn't be accused of hinting at anything, good or bad.

look at the positives not the negatives. this is still a person, if you truly want to do something genuine? if you were fat, a smoker in your mid 40's what would you appreciate? is this a nice person, how about a kind word wrapped up in compassion.

Is there anything she'd like to learn how to do (cook, sew, sculpt, etc)? Does she like books? What about candy, a gift card, or maybe even flowers? You could buy her lunch or dinner.
Hope this helps.

HAHAAHAH I love the description.
A female zippo lighter would be nice, or chocolate for her fat cravings.
Maybe a fruit basket....lol

Nicotine patch... I kid.

Something small she can put on her desk at work. Otherwise, candy or homemade treats would be okay. Maybe a fancy candle.
