I know how frustrating that is. One of my dogs has skin allergies, too.

You'll need to confirm with your vet that it is a skin allergy, and he'll be able to give her some anti-inflammatory medicine to get over the worst of it, but the rest will be up to you.

There's a shampoo you can get at your vet's office called LyTar. It's a bit like human dandruff shampoo. It doesn't smell too good, but it really clears up their skin, and relieves itching.

Your vet will also be able to instruct you on how to give your dog some benadryl, or other allergy medicine.

Even if you don't see fleas, it can still be a flea allergy. It only takes one bite for some dogs to get a big rash. Good luck with your little sweetie. I hope she feels better soon.

I know exactly how your feel. I have a tiny Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. He has the worst allergies I have ever seen. He will scratch his eyes and ears and chew on his tail and feet. His eyes can get so bad that there is no hair around them and his ears are scabby when his allergies are bad. I doubt that it's fleas, but if it is not allergies it could be mites.

They do this test where they scrape the dog's eye lid (it bleeds a little) to determine if it is mites or not. My dog has taken the test twice, but that wasn't it. They always prescribe him the same thing, but it only works for a week or so. It is these little cortizone tablets, but they are a waste of money for me. When I run out, I just buy the baby benadryl tablets and give my JoJo half of one. It does about the same thing, but I'm sure it will be different for your chow since she is bigger.

If you really want to find what the allergy is, they do a test on dogs like they do on humans to find allergies. It's pretty expensive and they are going to have to shave off half of your chow's hair. Then, they'll do a skin-scratch test to find out exactly what it is. Finally, they'll make a medicine just for your dog that will cut out the allergies completely.

If she for sure has allergies you can give her Benedryl. Both of my dogs have allergies. My one has food allergies and to keep his allergies in check he can not have any beef. Food allergies are a trial and error type of thing. My other dog has environamental allergies and he has to be on Benedryl. You got try to find out what type of allergies your dog has. The vet can run tests and treat it from there.
Your dog could have fleas or mites. Fleas you can address on yourself but mites you need to go to the vet.
It could be simple as dry skin. Oatmeal bathes are good for that.

It is possible that your dog has allergies. Sometimes your dog will have fleas and you don't know. I would take your dog to the vet to make sure there are not fleas. if it is allergies then your vet can give an injection and or prescribe meds. to help. If it is fleas then you need to get your dog on a flea preventative, your vet can advise you on that too

Take her to a vet to determine the cause of the allergies. It might be fleas, and it might be a food allergy. The vet will be able to recommend a new brand diet, to help relieve the irritation, or other preventive information.

Maybe it is the type of soap you bathe her with. Try finding something that is for delicate skin or cover the sores in vicks it will keep her from scratching and biting it.

you can give your dog a small amount of benadryl to help until you can get to the vet. my mother's dog had the same problem and the vet had her start feeding him nothing but cooked chicken and rice - not dog food. apparently there are ingredients in dog food that lots of dogs are allergic to.

talk to your vet. our dog had allergies but it was mostly itchy eyes & ears. THey recommended Benedryl. Check with your vet on the appropriate dosage for your breed and size of dog.

ask your vet about prednazone shots. some dogs only need them about once every 2 months. also try putting a sweater or shirt on her. (this keeps my jack russel from scratching) also try oatmeal shampoo or gerber baby shampoo in oatmeal.
