I want to get my mom something nice, something she will really like for once. My mom gets everything she needs for herself. She doesn't wear jewelry except for her wedding and engagement rings. She doesn't wear much make-up. She doesn't wear scented things because my dad's allergic. She's not really into herself so a massage or a manicure or something like that wouldn't be used. My dad is an antique collector, so they have all kinds of pretty things to sit around. She enjoys cooking but she teaches a culinary program and does that all day so she really doesn't cook much at home. She loves her grandchildren but she takes pictures of them and I give her pictures of them all the time. Any suggestions?

If there's still time, something personalized. Something either engraved or stitched or whatever, that has her name, a date, some sentiment. That shows it's specifically for her and not just something you picked up that could be for anyone. Or one of those gifts that keeps on giving, like a coffee of the month or Omaha steaks of the month or something. Or something sentimental that represents something from your childhood that meant a lot to both of you. Perhaps there was a book that she always read to you. You could find a copy of it and inscribe it with a note about how much it meant to you and what a good mother she is. Or, take her to experience something together, like if there's a performance of the Nutcracker near you or another show or concert she'd love. Make it a real family occasion and do dinner or bruch or whatever. Tell her you want to make it a holiday tradition to honor how special she always made Christmas for you. Mom's love that crap.

Give her the gift of your time. Offer to do something she would appreciate and might not be able to do herself: paint a room, clean out the basement/garage. Or make a date to spend an upcoming Saturday with her doing whatever she wants: go to an art gallery, on a boat ride, out to lunch, to a movie. Time with our children is one thing a mother never gets enough of.

Maybe make a date for you, your mom, and your kids to all go out and do something fun together that your mom would enjoy.

Sometimes, spending time with the ones you love is the perfect gift.

Do you do any crafts? Mothers almost universally appreciate anything their kids make, any little thing to decorate the house or whatever. If you don't, maybe you can go to one of those pottery shops that let you decorate / glaze pottery yourself & fire it for you ... make her a personalized teacup or coffee mug with a message from you on it or something.

Things I get my mom: windchime, heated throw for her lap, clock, pieces of her china pattern that she doesn't already have, holiday coffee mug, holiday table runner, nice cotton nightie, bottle of cognac
