On a cruise you get to see several islands, and you don't have to pack and unpack and change hotels. Your hotel goes with you.

It depends. Have you been to Hawaii before? If so, how many of the islands have you visited? If you haven't been to Hawaii, how much of the islands do you want to see? The cruises here give you just a little taste of each island as the ship is only in each port for a day or so. I have lived on Kauai for a year and a half and I haven't even come CLOSE to seeing everything here that I want to see -- and it's a tiny island! If you want to kick back, not have to drive, don't care all that much about specific sights, then a cruise sounds good. If you want to really see an island, pick a hotel, rent a car, and stay on the island. I recommend the "Revealed" series of books by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman. They have a book on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai, and Oahu and they're about $15 each. Get one or two of them and decide what interests you about each island. That should help you make your decision.

Good luck and have fun, whatever you decide to do!

I've done both. Loved the cruise because I got to see a little bit of each island - the down side is you don't stay at one island very long. Don't by any means sign up for any type of shore excursion that says 'tour' - you'll be in a bus all day - boring.

Loved staying on the island, got to see more of the island (we stayed on Oahu), and there was a lot to do - or nothing.

Either way, you can't go wrong going to Hawaii.

First, i'm the comparable timetravler through fact the different answer, yet a various email. I even have yet another suggestion for you. Do a cruise to Hawaii. you're able to try this from the two San Francisco or la(the two are in California). Princess cruises grants the two. That way you ought to verify San Francisco or la(Hollywood) via flying in an afternoon or 2 early, then do the cruise. A Hawaiian cruise is going to 4 Hawaiian islands, plus they have quite a few sea days from California to Hawaii and back. That way you ought to verify greater of the different islands, plus relax on sea days. A Hawaiian cruise is astounding and that i might choose for this option.

If you are new to the islands, a cruise is a great way to go! You basically use the ship as your hotle and stop at all of the islands, (Oahu, Kuaia,Big Island, etc) for part of a day. You can use the ship to go on and off at will. Also, you don't have to pay extra for meals on the ship. The meals are great!
The one drawback is that cruising has become very popular; so popular in fact that the cruise line (Norwegian, etc) have extremely high rates during the holiday season. It's best to go during an off time, then.
If you just like to kick back and relax or play golf, go to Mauai. It's beautiful with plenty of courses. Or Kuai also has courses.
If you want to play tourist, then go to Honolulu.
I've done both...and enjoyed them both.
Mali Kalikimaka! (Merry Christmas) in Hawaiian).

It depends on your age. if you want a taste of each island, be on a time schedule, be sure to be the first ones off the ship, it can take up to 2 hours to get off the ship.

I LOVE MAUI!!! been 3 times, maybe 4 and you can drive the east coast from south to north and back in 2 1/2 hours!
Hang out at any beach at any resort-- all beaches are public.
drive and park at the resort and take public access, they have showers before you get to parking lot and bathrooms.

Kauai is awesome, more tropical, and you really need a good tour guide book to find your way around. we stayed in Poi Po for 3 days, and the North west for $60.oo a night for 7 days, and in a Bed & Breakfast on an orchid farm the last 2 nights on the north shore........$80 a night. We hooked up with a couple who stayed in the bigger house on the nw shore, and they guided us to all the "hidden" beaches and best snorkling.

Depends on what you are looking for?
do you want to beach? choose an island, maui or kauai.
The Big Island Of Hawaii, If you have allergies, or ashma, avoid at all cost. the Volcanos are active and the air can be real nasty.
do you want to eat?--cruise it

Have you crusied before? did you like it?
If you haven't cruised before, I'd take a mini cruise first.
YOU are on a floating hotel, and not under American Flag when on a cruise.

If you are younger then, you may want to just stay on one island, and maybe go to different islands for just a day maybe and fly there are some VERY cheap airfare to the other islands. A cruise is fine, but you probably won't get the excitement of just staying on somewhere like Waikiki.

I think a cruise would be good, because you get a little taste of every island. You can explore everything the island has to offer, then see a totally new place. Also, cruises are great because you get to see things that you can't see in a car. It will also be less busy!

If you can try not to get the norwalk virus on a cruise that isn't a bad way to see all the islands. But if you have the time checking out one or two islands at length that isn't bad either.

If you are younger - just hang out in Waikiki. If you are 40+, a cruise is probably more relaxing.
I live in Hawaii, but am anxious to try the cruise (I am 40, though).
