What does a Breeder need to know when searching for a stud for a King Charles Cavalier?

1. Is he finished? What is his show record? Does he have any other titles?
2. What is his OFA hip rating?
3. What is his CERF results?
4. How are his patellae?
5. Has he been screened for MVD?
6. Has he been tested for brucellosis?
7. What is his pedigree?
8. What has he sired so far?
9. Photos at least, hands on evaluation is better.
10. How does he compliment the female? Which of her faults can he improve? Which of her faults would be doubled up on? How well do their pedigrees match?

A good start would be getting the breeds name correct:- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Go to shows & take along a copy of your dogs papers so experienced exhibitors can suggest a complimentary male.
Showing your stock would be even better.
Joining a breed club may help you find these people and give you the information on breed specific health testing needed.

Studs are warranted to be reproductively sound and physically healthy, with good confirmation, teeth and fiber density and no known phenotypic or genetic defects either in themselves or known offspring.
Three main things should be looked for:
- A respected pedigree
- A stellar show career
- Quality of the offspring

Make sure both dogs are pedigreed...you don't want to accidently breed brother to sister.

Try not to breed close related dogs (no same dogs in a 3 gen. pedigree).

Check his bite (the way his teeth meet up). Check to see if he is sound so he does not pass on faults to his pups.

I always look for a male/female that compliments my dog (ie. if my female has a too short neck, I look for a male that has a too long neck...an example is my female Rottweiler had a too long nose, and I bred her to a male with too short (for my taste) nose. The puppies had the perfect length).
