omg i have to have a root canal in 1 week and i am freaking out about it i am only 15 and i have a fear of needles and drills and the dentist in general so i really want to know what happens and i need dome support on the pain and stuff cuz im a flippin out my boi friend said he would go with me and hold me as long as he could... do you think thats a good idea? i am about to piss in my pants im so scared ..

My root canal was painful. And the recovery period over the next few days was even worse. But there are somethings you can do to make it less traumatic.
1) Be realistic. You have faced pain before, but it always goes away!
2) Since your mouth will be stretched open the whole time, you have to RELAX. Otherwise the muscles in your jaw will hurt for a week. Flippin out does not help.
3) Remind yourself: a root canal is better than unregulated tooth pain.
4) Remember that Dentists are highly trained professionals. You are in good hands!
I think bringing your boyfriend (or a teddy bear) is a great idea. They may not let the bf stay they whole time, but he can be there to give you a hug after the whole thing is over.

I'm 10 and I had a root canal. This may sound bad but the give you a shot in your mouth to numb everything and than they put you on this gas called laughing gas. You don't even know what is going on it makes you feel like you are on top of the clouds. It really isn't that bad they just make it sound bad. And It's normal to be scared I'm scared when ever I go to the dentist. I don't know if that is what they do at your dentist but you can ask someone. Sometimes you have to ask for the gas. They put the gas on first so you wont feel the shot. Hope I helped!

I would really look into this. I am 25 and had a root canal when I was your age. Just 2 years ago, the dentist told me that the root canals were bad and a source of all of my mouth pain. They had to remove them. It's really sweet that your BF will be there with you, but I would talk more about this with your dentist.

I just had one done in October and it is no picnic. Though they numbed my tooth I could still feel the drill because they were touching some of the nerve. It isn't really bad now but the pain was tolerable. The procedure took about 2 hours. They put a temporary crown also and two weeks later I had my permament crown. This is December and I am still having trouble with my tooth. It takes a long time for it to heal and my boss told me his took a while also. Everytime I floss I bleed, and it hurts and every time I chew food gets stuck. You have to get it done though and no way around it. I am totally against sedation if you have never had it before. The reason being is that you don't know if you will be allergic to it or not and dentist don't have the right equipment in case of emergencies.

Advice for patients undergoing root canal treatment
Root treatments, as they are widely known, are much-feared by many people - and sometimes with good reason. The sensitive nature of teeth that require work of this sort lends itself to them being more sensitive to the work, akin to bruising of the skin. Patients undergoing root canals should heed a few simple, but effective, steps to reduce pain associated with such procedures. The first step would be to consider, at the discretion of one's dentist, a course of antibiotics although these are only appropriate in the case of infected teeth. Failing that, or as an accompaniment, patients may wish to follow a couple of days' course of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which will reduce inflammation in the nerve and reduce sensitivity. In extreme cases patients should brush the teeth and gums more regularly, taking care not to miss any areas that are sensitive due to infection - this will reduce the swelling over time and relieve some of the pressure under the tooth until it can be seen to. Root treatments can be as pain-free as regular fillings if the area is properly tended to, and in certain cases the nerve is already dead so the entire treatment can be completed painlessly without an analgesic administered. In almost all cases the pain associated historically with this procedure can be avoided easily.

I have had a few and and have never enjoyed going to the dentist for anything, let alone a root canal. But I was lucky enough to find a 'painless dentist'. And they were. As soon as I felt any discomfort I indicated it and the dentist supplied more novocaine. When asked if you have any allergies, always answer "PAIN". Always allergic to pain. Relax. Let the doctoe know that you are skittish. And that you will let him know at the first sign of discomfort so as to add more drugs. Make sure someone is available to drive you home after. You don't want to drive yourself. Good luck.

I'm a nurse. Breathe it will be ok. I don't think that's a good idea to know the process. I would ask for some sedation. The dentist have many types. I would ask him before he begins. Also call the dentist and let him know how you feel. He can then in turn have even more options to help you through the process. All the best and try to relax. It also couldn't hurt to have a couple of ibprofen to relax you before you get there. Take care.

Once you get passed the needle (medicine for numbing) it's not bad. Make sure you get meds to take home. I have had 3 root canals, having another next Wednesday.

Oh my goodness you have nothing to worry about I just had one a few months ago and everyone gave me horror stories, and then the day came and I had it done, all I had was Novocaine...I felt none of the root canal, I didn't even have pain afterwords! It's gonna be ok, don't worry yourself, I promise!

Dont panic. I had a root canal and did not feel a thing. Only a slight pinch from the needle but that was it. As long as your dentist knows what he or she is doing, you will be fine.
