What is the best way for me to buy a car (I can only put down 1K-1.5K). I would like to keep my payments as low as possible and I don't need anything too nice. I know how stupid this question is but I just don't understand how everybody can afford $250 + insurance +gas + etc.

Well, if you had a job that pays about 25-30K annually, no kids, and your rent was reasonable, I'm sure you'd be able to afford a decent car as well. Answer: get a better paying job.
Of course, you CAN afford a car. It just won't be as nice as the ones that cost $250 monthly. Instead of just putting down the 1K, if you are mechanically inclined, you can Buy a car for double that price.

I have a 2003 Grand Caravan & pay 364.91 a month. I am not in debt up to my eyeballs like one of your answers implied. We budget and understand that this vehicle is going to last us for at least 10 years. We have 3 kids and are a 1 income family. My husband is in the military so our 1 income is not huge. You have to honestly evalute your situation and look at where you want to go. Having a 2-5 year plan for your life can help. Good luck.

First decide what car you want (sedan or truck)
Then go to Carmax.com and check out deals near you.

I highly suggest you go for a used car which is yet reliable. I suggest EARLY models of Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, etc. Yes, they are old but VERY reliable.

OMG, i can't imagine a 250 per month payment. What could you get, a kia? To get anything decent, you'll have to double that.

Stay within your budget and go for a gently used car and stay away from suv's or anything that would use too much gas

All of those people are in debt up to their eyeballs. Go for a used car but be sure it isn't a lemon.
