I am 32 yrs old. I quit smoking back in April of 2006.

I was heavy then, weighted around 230, and was probably about 40-50 lbs heavy then.

Well, now..today I went to doctor, weighed in at 274 lbs. I knew I gained weight, but wasnt sure how much.

The doctor didnt really tell me much, just to watch my calorie intake, and to keep it around 2000-2200, and to exercise.

I asked what he would recomend , he said anything that raises my heart beat to 160 , and to do it 5 times a week for 30 minutes.

I asked about working out in a gym 3 times a day for like 1hr to 1 and half hours, and he said 5 times a week for 30 mins or I wouldnt be happy with my results.

I am confused, it doesnt make sense to me, I would think 3 times a week for an hour - hour and half would show major improvements, but Im not a doctor.

Im asking the experts here for maybe an explaination, or maybe some ways to do work outs to raise my heart beat .

Thanks !

the more oftin you do it, the better. just because you work out longer doesnt mean that you would get as much as a result.

go for a walk, run, dance around the house, bike ride. anything that raises your heart beat and makes you start sweating. and once your heart rate is up, you have to keep it up for about 30 minutes. you can still join a gym, but just go for 30 minutes a day. get on a treadmill for 15-20 minutes, then do some leg presses or squat-like exercises (working your long muscles helps burn more calories and fat better than working smaller muscle groups - but dont neglect them or those areas wont get toned), then when you're done get back on the treadmill for the last 5 minutes or so

if you have a circuit training gym you can try them, they are designed to keep your heart rate up while toning your muscles

I am older than you and I have recently quit smoking as well. I was eating way to much and had to force myself to re train the system.

Only eat when you are hungry and not when you just need something to do. Keep track of when and what you eat for five days and then begin to make the time longer between times of eating until you can start droping one here and there. Yes you will feel hungry but you will not starve. Little by little you can train your system to only wnat food two or three times per day. Most of the time I only eat twice a day. Not big meals either. No I am not fat now not at all.

Eating becomes more of a habit than a necessity for most of us so get it back into the necessary state.

If you do this three times a week for an hour and a half your body is going to be in great pain. That much I know. You will have slight pain doing your work outs like your doctor recommended. It will be much easier on your body this way. Also getting your self into a routine of the same five days for 30min. is just a smart start in your journey to better health.

Good luck

Many patients ask me how they can slim down. I recommend that people eat right and exercise. However, if they would like a little "help", I suggest using Hoodia X600 Plus (it's important to note that not all Hoodia works well, even if the bottle says "pure" or "standard").

The Hoodia 600X Plus being sold at http://www.alllsite.info/hoodia-weight-loss.php is in my opinion, the best product on the market. It's pure, no side effects, and they give you a free 15 day sample (there is a $7.99 shipping charge, but they also give you free recipe and diet guides). My patients have seen fantastic results with this particular Hoodia.

Do what you feel comfortable with. Doctors dont give you the truth anymore. If you went to the gym and over did it, had a heart attack or something else, you could sue the doctor for saying it was ok. They err on the side of caution. But, go with what your body tells you. If you can stand 1hr, do 1 hr, if it is less, then go for less. He is just wanting you to increase your exercise, and for another opinion, join and gym and talk to a personal trainer. They will give you another opinion all together!! Good Luck, and congrats for making such an important life change, and investment in yourself and your future!!

Are you doing just strength training 3 times a week? That might be the issue, because it seems that you may be just putting on muscle more than burning fat (since muscle is denser than fat). So you need to balance it - your doctor may mean doing cardio for 30 min every day. That can be just walking. And on the days that you're strength training, you can break up the cardio (warm ups/cool downs)

First you need to get rid of the fat. And working out won't help you with that. Working out will tone/build up muscle, which won't show due to the excess of fat you're carring.

It's better for you to start taking brisk walks for half hour every day and start trying to eat healthy food. You'll see results soon. In a while you could start working out on a gym, it always help.
