Put the newcomer in a room with the door closed. This way, both of the cats can get to know each other because what they'll do is play footies with each other underneath the door. They can get used to each other's scent this way. Or put the new kitty in a cat carrier and let them go nose to nose that way. Only when you're sure they'll get along is when you can leave them alone together. Otherwise, the older cat could attack the kitten. The older cat is the one who should have the run of the house since it's his "territory". He feels threatened right now because another cat is invading his territory. More than likely, they will eventually get along, it just takes time. This is the way I did it with my cats and it took a few days of having to keep the new cat in a room by herself but it did work.

An older cat that has never been around other cats may never become friends with your new cat, but they will learn to coexist. I have four cats, one of which does not like other cats, she will tolerate them as long as they don't mess with her and they have learned to leave her alone. I would introduce them slowly at first, letting the original cat get used to the smell of the new cat and then let them handle it. They will either learn to be friends or the new cat will learn to leave the older one alone.

The only answer is time. Cats are territorrial, and you're older cat won't be happy about sharing his or her home with the new kitty. Once your first cat gets used to the idea that the new cat is here to stay, he will accept it. They could just tolerate each other after time and learn to co-exist, or hopefully they will really bond and become fast friends.

when i brought my 2nd cat into the house, i was told to put baby powder on them both so they wouldn't be able to distinguish a different smelling cat. while the older one still wasn't too happy - i kept them in separate rooms at night, and within a week they were (and still are) best of friends.

it was funny though - the baby powder turned my new black kitten completely gray for a while :) poor guy...

Just give them time. It may take a while but eventually they will get along or avoid each other. If the older cat hisses at the kitten do whatever you would normally do when that cat does something bad.

They have to establish who is boss. It may take awhile and there may be a few scuffles but just leave them alone to work it out. There really is nothing that you can (or should) do.
