I have discussed this question over many pints with a college friend, he majored in biology and is now a veterinarian.

There are three reasons:
1) Intake. Many college men think nothing of drinking six or more beers over the course of a couple of hours. Do the math - that is nearly a gallon of liquid intake. Do you ever drink that much of any other beverage in so short a time?

2) Inability to absorb the liquid. Alcohol interferes with kidney function. The body is unable to absorb this liquid into the cells, so more passes out as urine that otherwise would. BTW this is why you wake up thirsty after a long night of drinking. In addition, dehydration causes headaches.

3) Metabolism. When the liver breaks down alcohol one of the by-products is water.

So there are three reasons. You are taking in more liquid than usual, the body cannot absorb this liquid and the body then excretes more than you take in.

Well when the first beer "train" decides to leave the "station" they depart on a regular schedule of every 15 minutes or so. That's what happens to me.

beer is a dyuretic, like water, the more you drink, the more it cleans out your body of fluids. that's why you're so thirsty the next day- that thirst causes the hang over!
