It seems that every other person on here has a Chihauhau. I'm not insulting, but could someone please tell me what's so great about them? They're not my personal choice for a dog, but why are they so popular with everyone else? Is this a trend thing?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and to own whatever breed they choose, I'm not putting anyone down. But what happened that made the Chihuahua so popular?

Huh...guess I just don't watch enough TV.

I'll never understand that way of thinking. People should really just be themselves and stop trying to live life as Hollywood defines as "cool"!

BTW, to those of you who were "Chihuahua when Chihuahua wasn't cool"....I'm not talking about you.

I've had Chihuahuas all my life. I have #5 of them now, and I would not give them up for anything. I love all dogs, but would not own anything other than a Chihuahua. It may have been the Taco Bell Chihuahua, {Gidget} that started the Chihuahua craze. If you know Chihuahuas like I do, they are very loyal, loving, smart, protecive, affectionate, great little watch dogs, very friendly,[at least mine are}, I guess it depends on how they are raised and socialized}, very low maintenance, love to cuddle with you, fun to dress up, very cute, and you can take them with you just about anywhere you go.

i don't understand the attraction to chihuahuas either. Sure they're cute when properly cared for, but my friend had one that was almost raised on people food *think KFC* and once you see a chihuahua that's wider than it is tall, you never really see the attraction again.
Also, because it is a trend, there are more being produced to fill the demand, and because the market has become flooded they are cheaper.
Can't wait for that to happen with the papillons.... though quality will be sacrificed, so not really a good idea at all. I'd like there to be more on the market, but I'd also like there to be more breeders thus more supply either way to fill the demand resulting in a dog that doesn't cost more to buy than the food it will consume in it's lifetime *i'm not sure if that statement was an exageration...*
Then again, I've never met a yappy chihuahua. They've all been very well tempered, though my experience only includes two long-haireds and the morbidly obese one*who is now on a diet, but still weighs twice the amount of a dog one pund over the largest accepted standard weight, 14lbs*

I never thought in a million years I'd have a chihuahua...I was always a big dog person. I believed the stereotypes about them just like all small dog haters. But when my springer spaniel passed away, I really wanted another dog, and because I travel frequently I wanted a dog that could fly in the cabin with me. That was the main reason I got a chihuahua. Hands down, the best decision I ever made!! They are so affectionate, uber cute, and very intelligent. I can't say enough good things about them. Unfortunately, they're not always the most social dogs, so the owners are usually the only ones who really understand them and see their sweet personalities. You really need to have one in your home to understand why they're so amazing. It makes me sad to think of young girls getting them just for an accessory, then dumping them at the pound because they realize they're living breathing creatures that need constant care. If it is a trend, I hope it becomes "uncool" very soon.

Yeah I agree. It's dumb that people want a Chihuahua just because it's a "cute accesory". Personally I have a chihuahua mix which he looks identical to a long hair chihuahua, but the only reason we have a chihuahua is because his litter was the only puppy litter at the pound when we were looking for a dog. But personally I have found him to be the best kind of dog...he doesn't let bigger dogs be the big dogs haha and he is very loving and smart.

Can you imagine getting a dog because of a commercial or because some idiot celebrity has one? LOL!!!

IMO, UGH! I have taught obedience classes for 25 years, and have seen more biting Chi's than any other breed! Sorry Chi people, just my opinion!

I did have a rescue Chihuahua puppy recently, and he was really sweet. I am just not a small dog person, although I do love my little Crested.

Bladedogs - LMAO!!! I know just what you mean, I always feel like such an idiot showing a toy breed!

We have MANY of these dogs in our area. They are small, can be carried around.
They are short haired so easy groomers. Do no eat much.
We are not small dog lovers, but if given the opportunity we could add one of these little dogs into the mix real easy they are so small...
This would be a site with the Saint Bernard and the English Mastiff is having a tiny dog like this lol! Then our Aussie's could herd them around the house lol!
Anyhoo this is why I think they are so popular...Not everyone has room for big dogs.

Chihuahua dogs are popular because they are very devoted to their owner. While this devotion can be found in many dog breeds, chihuahuas are the smallest. Their size makes it easier to live in a smaller home or apartment with them, they don't require long walks like some dogs, they eat less - meaning they cost less to feed, and you can take them places with you where other dogs would not be permitted due to size.

It may just be a trend, but I think people are realizing that chihuahuas aren't just dogs for snobbish rich women.

I have two... not really by choice. I volunteer for a rescue group, and unfortunately they get tons of Chi's... probably due to people thinking they are cool and then realizing that they are usually little terrors! One just decided to cling to me and I couldn't let him go, then several months later we got a sick one that I nursed back to health and couldn't let him go either. I actually prefer big dogs, but I love my two Chi's... they both boss around my Golden Retriever! Like everyone else has said, I blame Taco Bell, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears among others.

At the risk of being totally hated by most people here, I DONT like chihuahuas. NEVER DID.Every one I've ever came across was yappy, nippy and under foot. But, I dont like yorkies, poms, pugs or most toy breeds. I am a big dog person. I have two Pekes( my daughters) but they act big? This is just my preference. Most people dont like Saints because of the drool. That doesnt bother me at all. I Love the look of a majestic dog, the strength of the animal and its ability to still be graceful. I loved the fact not everyone could own or manage a Saint.

We chose a chihiahua because we wanted a small dog for our house that would not shed much and make much of mess. We also wanted a dog that would sit on our lap while we watch TV and that had a calmer personality...which is funny because a lot of chihuahuas are not calm...we just happped to luck out in that department. He is a very loving dog.
