God is Love. But "He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires" (Romans 9:18)
God is not indebted to us, but we owe Him a debt we cannot repay. (See Matthew 18:21-35) All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory. It is not as if we had one or two little moral failings, God testified against mankind before the flood "Then the Lord saw the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of His heart was only evil continually" (Genesis 6:5). This is not hard to see if you just look at some of the things being said on this website - like the chattering of so many demons.
We need to fear God because He is the absolute and final authority over the eternal destiny of every individual, and once final sentence is passed, it is eternally irreversible according to the testimony of Scripture. This is one of the foundation teachings of Christianity referred to as "eternal judgment" (Hebrews 6:1-3)
Jesus said one day he would declare to His enemies: "Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41)
If a cop pulls you over for speeding, you fear because you know he has authority to give you a traffic ticket. What will it be like in the day you stand before the final judge, knowing that your eternal destiny is about to be forever settled?
"For the fear of the Lord is the first principle of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One, that is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10)

God is HOLY and RIGHTEOUS and it is a Holy Fear, a Reverant Fear of Him. It is a good Fear, not like that of fearing man on earth- or the kind of fear you think of- But a reverant fear. We are to fear the lord- He is God! He holds our breath in His hands! And as Proverbs 1:7 says "The Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge"

I dont' fear God. I know that he is all loving, and all forgiving. I live my life the best way I can, and I practice my religion on my own terms, without traditional restraints. God can appreciate my individual dedication. I don't fear him at all. I know he loves me.
