If you have to have a heirarchy of friends (which I always thought was silly to begin with), I'd drop this one a rung or two down from 'best'. Then say 'stop being a lousy sod that talks behind my back' and give her a chance to earn her place back.

I suggest asking her about it. Or maybe there's just someone jealous of your friendship, and trying to ruin it. The best thing to do is ask your friend about it. Be sure to do it privately. A crowd tends to bring on more drama. If you trust her after talking, then let it go. If not, it's time to move on.

She's not your best friend. Cut your losses & realize you made an error in judgement. It's happend to all of us. Move on, and beware if they talk about others behind they're back then you can bet they're talking about you behind your back. Good luck.

Tape record all the crap she says about all her other friends. Then have a pizza party one night. Don't invite her. Then play the tape for everyone else. I'll bet she doesn't have any friends any more. She's not a "friend" she's a nosey, gossipy opportunist who craves attention.

Confront her about it. Tell her you don't appreciate the things she's saying and that if she has something to say she needs to come to you directly. I would get rid of her as a friend, because it doesn't sound like she's a friend at all.

While talking about why your friend gossips about you would be idealistic, the more practical approach would be to disengage from the friendship.

Well, first of all, I would stop calling them my best friend. Second, I would confront them about it.
