This question is one of the ones that I was unable to answer to my satisfaction when I was a practicing Christian, and it was one that led to my leaving the faith. I once asked my brother (also a Christian) about this problem, and he responded by saying that every person alive today will have the chance to accept or reject Jesus as his or her savior. I didn't think this was possible, as there are people who live in remote areas of the world who will never hear of a person called Jesus. He simply repeated that everyone gets a chance, adding that the Holy Spirit has something to do with it.
I, too, have a hard time reconciling the judgmental God who sends people to Hell (or simply allows them to go there) with the infinitely compassionate God of the New Testament.
Personally, I believe that God does want to rescue everyone from Hell, but that Hell may not be a physical place. I have come to think of Hell as a place we have all been and a place where many of us still remain -- a place of suffering and pain in our actual lives -- from which God wants to liberate us.
I think perhaps if you view Hell in this way, your relationship with God will improve. After all, the Bible says that any stumbling block that comes between you and the Lord should be removed. And if Hell causes you to question your faith, then it would be better for you in the long run to change the way you think about it.

Actually, in traditional Christian theology, it doesn't matter because only God has control over who gets into Heaven because of his Election. Humans have no control over their own salvation; it has 100% to do with God and his election, which includes the infusion of Grace and so forth. It wasn't until about 200 year ago in the history of Christianity (the last 10% of the religion) that your question could even exist. With the inclusion of the "anxious bench" then Christians began to feel like they could convert and have control over their own salvation. Before this, no one knew about salvation, and no one questioned God's role. Many people suffered great anxiety because they did not know what was in store for them after death. Even Martin Luther didn't know if he was elected for salvation or not!
With regard to your question, according to Christian theology today in many sects, the child-murdered could go to Heaven if he repented and loved Jesus a whole bunch before his own death. However, as I stated earlier this is not traditional Christian theology.

Of course god doesn't treat them the same. The child-murderer just has to convert and ask forgiveness before they execute him and he will get into heaven with all the child raping priests.
No hope for the Buddhist, though.

The Buddhist will not go to Hell because he/she does not believe in the Western concept of Hell.
Most followers of the Abrahamic religions cannot get out of the box their minds are in to understand there is a whole world out there that is beyond their understanding.

All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory, being merely good is not going to save you cause according to who's standards are you good?
Ever told a lie? ever stolen anything? Im sure you've done both, I sure have.
Did ya know if you lust after someone you've commited Adultery?
I use to think ok since im a Virgin I never commited Adultery but guess what ok yes im still a Virgin but ya know what when I lusted I certainly did commit the Sin of Adultery.
I thought myself as a good decent person but ya know what it's like wait a minute according to who's standards was I good, mine or God's?
Well it was according to my standards but ya know what God's standards outweigh my own.
We all deserve to go to Hell but Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, if that Buddhist man decides to accept Jesus Christ as savior then he'll go to heaven inspite of having been a Buddhist.
Even the Child murderer you speak of can repent, accept Christ and go to Heaven.
A substitute Pastor that was at my Church knew a Chaplain who was fluent in German that had gone over to Germany to preach to Nazis so they could learn of Christ and have a chance to repet and be saved, yet most of the Nazis who were in Prison said neine danke (no thank you)

Yes, it does not make any sense. Unless.... Unless you understand that Christian dogma was developed with one very important idea in mind - to make conversion as easy as possible. Hey, it does not matter what you do, how you live your life, just convert and accept Jesus and you'll be guaranteed a place in heaven.

God says in His Word that He has sheep in many folds. Being a good person isn't enough to get into heaven but God is just and fair and nobody will be in heaven if they don't want to be there. AND nobody will be left out if they TRUELY do want to be there. God knows who would be happy there and who won't.
