The fir tree has a long association with Christianity, it began in Germany almost 1,000 years ago when St Boniface, who converted the German people to Christianity, was said to have come across a group of pagans worshipping an oak tree. In anger, St Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and to his amazement a young fir tree sprung up from the roots of the oak tree. St Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith. But it was not until the 16th century that fir trees were brought indoors at Christmas time.

NV's got the right idea. Martin Luther in the 16th century was amazed at how the stars looked shining through the fir trees at night, and brought home a tree and lit candles on it. When the German immigrants came to America, they brought their tradition of Christmas trees with them. Also: the tree has 3 sides like the Trinity is 3: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, evergreens never lose their needles or turn colors, like God is always there for us.

I not sure why you do it, but, We like the smell of the tree and the lights at night. Children always get excited, all they know is, this where the presents go. We also, buy one special decoration or make it that have a special meaning from the past year and we sit with the children and adults too and tell the stories of the ornaments. One day we hope the children will continue this tradition and pass the stories to there children. It a way of knowing a little of our family past.

The worship of nature started out as a pagan idea. When christianity started encroaching and converting everyone, the pagans would transplant a tree and move it indoors to worship because they were fearful of the christians. Seeing that the pagans wouldn't adopt their new holidays and rituals the church started incorporating the pagan traditions with the christian traditions instead of banning them outright making it easier to convert the native peoples. After time, bringing a tree inside during the celebration of christmas just became a normal thing.

The custom is actual a pagan one from northern Europe that replaced into followed with the help of the Christian church and integrated into the holiday. The decorations of the tree were reported to represent the forbidden fruit from the backyard of Eden. And the date is likewise initially a pagan holiday date that the church took over to carry extra into the flock.
