Note that the cat was first in the household and then came the dog. The dog was patient with the cat in the beginning but now is fed up with the cat's hissing and clawing. How do I introduce them without them killing each other? Thanks in advance to anyone with answers.

Keep them separated in two different rooms and each day put the cat in a carrier in the same room with the dog to allow them to get used to each others smell. Spray Feliway in the carrier prior to putting the cat in.
Always reward the dog for good behavior and discourage the dog's bad behavior by a firm "NO".
Keep up this practice till they are used to each other and no more hissing, etc...

I see trouble on the horizon How about some good old-fashioned obedience training ... have you done that yet? We had two dogs that were obedience trained and they were a joy to have in the family. We had a dog that was dumb as a box of rocks and never trained, what a disappointment. Check w/your local shelter about low-cost obedience training - it will go a long way to improve matters and don't leave them home alone in the same room if you can't trust them together. :)

APBT's can have a very high prey drive, i.e. cats, squirrels, rabbits. It's pretty much hit or miss depending on the dog. The best thing to do is give your cat a safe sanctuary to hang out in that it can easily avoid the dog.

Cats are very territorial. You should introduce them to each other slowly. Let them get a chance to get use to each other.
