Short grain rice is more sticky than long grain rice so use a longer grain of rice if you don't like it as sticky. Also rinse it well first to remove the loose starch powder from the rice.

Dixie, heat up some oil or butter in a pan then add the dry rice in and stir the rice until all the grains turn a bright white color (you are coating each grain with the oil), then add the required amount of boiling water to it, stir and cover with a tight fitting lid and reduce the heat source to the lowest possible flame or temp and do not take off the lid, after 15 minutes turn off the heat source and let stand for 5 minutes.

The starch in the rice makes gluten which sticks together when it is cooked. Before you cook it, rinse the rice several times in cold water and drain it off to get rid of the extra starch on the outside of the grains.

What is actually making the rice stick is the starch on it. The safer bet would be to wash the rice over and over.. until the rice is clear.. after adding water..
Also .. try adding some butter, or any other types of oil for taste.. and less stickyness..

Wash the rice several times beforehand.
Don't use quite as much water.
Use a little flavorless non-stick spray or butter on the inside of your cooking vessel.

Use Jasmine or Basmati and it shouldn't stick. Calrose and other short grain varieties are designed to stick together. It depends on what the purpose of the rice is, as to which variety you use. I keep three varieties on hand all the time.

Rinse it really well. Pour cold water on it, stir it around and drain it - at least twice. Works for me - I use a rice cooker though, so I dont know if that will make any difference or not.

Make sure your rice to water ratio is correct. Do not lift the cover until it's done - no peeking

Add a couple of tablespoons of vegetable oil to the boiling water. This works for pasta too.
