I'm not completely lactose intolerant, but I cannot handle certain dairy products in the morning (I cannot drink milk with breakfast, but I can have cream cheese). As well, it seems that if I eat an abundance of dairy over the course of a couple of days, I can get really sick. It's very hit or miss however. Is anyone in a similar situation? How could I better describe this to my doctor?

I would also look up information on milk sensitivities. Sometimes we react differently to similar foods because we are sensitive when certain foods are mixed or consumed together.
For example:
I had the same problem and my doctor told me just to log everything I had to eat and log how I felt afterwards.
He found that I was sensitive to milk, but only when it was mixed with a large concentration of sugar. So I can't eat milk and sugary cereals, or dip cookies in milk, or eat ice cream, but macaroni and cheese or pizza is usually fine (as long as the sugar content of other ingredients is low).

I would definitely explain to the doctor everything that you just did, but it may help to journal your food intake and symptoms prior to your visit, just so he/she has a more precise understanding of your symptoms.

Thank goodness! I thought I was the only one out there who could not drink regular milk, but could do with some cheese or some sour cream. Thanks for asking this!

I switched over to Lactaid milk and have been symptom free since I did, although I did not change my cheese or sour cream consumption. Last night, I had potato skins with sour cream and ate more sour cream than usual. There was some rumbling, but not like it was with milk -- gas production increased a bit, but no voiding of the bowels.

I thought I was the only one ... thank you! You did a great job explaining your symptoms!

Describe it as u just did. The variation probably occurs because of the quantity and quality of the dairy products you consumed.

I guess different people have different degrees of lactose tolerance.
