I feel cigerettes are just as harmful to ones health as many other drugs, it is a controlled substance, and it causes cancer to others, if one smokes crack and stops there is no after effects, if you smoke and quit you can get very sick and die.

The tobacco companies have a big lobby that spends a lot of money helping our upstanding government officials get elected, it is a huge industry that employs a lot of people. Again, government chooses power over people.

I have not asked why they are illegal to buy since they generate tax revenue. My problems are two fold. First, given the fact they are VERY BAD for you why do people buy them? And second, because of their cost to society why arn't they taxed more. A case in point, while serving as an elected official dealing with indegents, our county put out millions of dollars for the treatment of smoking related medical care. The costs were never recovered. Thus, if people feel they need to smoke, they should also pay MORE TAX for the privilage.

Cigarettes are legal because they don't harm others except in residual smoke situations. Drinking is also legal, but drinking and driving isn't because of the harm such activities do to others.

Now, having said all that and you beat your drum for the cause of banding smoking, how would it be inforced given our history of smoking? What compensation would you give to farmers who raise the crop and have little choice for profitable alternatives? There are many more questions to making smoking illegal than there are for keeping it legal. Good luck in your fight. I will support you when answers are provided to all the other questions.

Your facts are really WRONG. There are after effects of smoking crack. Cigarettes are not a controlled substance.

Yes, cigarettes are very harmful....but they are not and will never be immediately fatal as other drugs like alcohol, cocaine, heroin, etc. can be.

Unless there comes a time where you can take a drag off a cigarette and die...they will be legal and they will be taxed big time to make money off those who refused to listen to warnings of what long-term smoking can do to you.

Because the government makes money off smokers, at least in Canada that seems to be the reason. The government puts these "smoking causes cancer" and kinds of other warnings on cigarette packs here, and they spend money on adds saying how terrible it is for you, yet they won't ban it. It's because they like all the money they get back from the taxes on cigarettes AND when people smoke they tend to die younger and then the government doesn't have to pay them their old age pensions.

You are quite right about the harmful effects of cigarettes. The main reason is that many farmers in the eastern USA would need to find different crops to grow and governments would lose a huge tax revenue. Governments do not like upsetting farmers or losing money so they won't make it illegal any time soon.

The it is not the government's job to protect us from ourselves. It is our job as adult citizens to govern ourselves. If I decide to harm myself it is legal, as well it should be. The reason other drugs are not legal is because there is no way to monitor what you are really getting. Someone can say it is one thing and it be laced with something else. That being said, it should still be legal. All drugs should be legal. It is not the government's job to decide for me.
PS. I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, or even drink caffeine (which is also very harmful to many)

Although cigs are addictive for many, you don't find a lot of people that will steal, lie, cheat, etc to get them (like a lot of crack users do).

Alcohol is not healthy, and when using it people can be a hazard to others (drinking and driving) and yet it is legal.

If every substance that was harmful to us were outlawed, there would be little left to eat or drink...that most would enjoy anyway....

It all revolves around money. They are legal beacuse of the tax dollars generated from the sale of tobacco products .

Crack , Pot ,Alcohol ,and other drugs can have after effects that can linger on for years or a life time both physical and physological. We make our own choices.

Because there is a lot of money involved and huge companies wants to earn money.
You could make a similar question asking why with all teh new technologies around you can't buy a car that doesn't use oil to run but water instead! Beacause huge companies pay to keep oil as first resource!

The tobacco industry continues to be one of the most powerful and influentual lobbys in the world.
As long as people are willing to pay, and as long as there are politicians, there will be legal tobacco sales.
If dogshit had the same effect on people, it would be sold for $10 a bag.
