It depends on the size and atmosphere of your company. If it's a large corporation where you don't have a lot of day-to-day interaction with your boss, it might be seen as brown nosing to get a gift. If that's your situation, just a card should be sufficient and will probably be appreciated by her.
If you work for a very small company or have a lot of daily interaction with your boss, then a small gift with a card would be nice. Something $25 or less like a gift card, nice chocolates, a book, or CD would be nice.

Not necessarily. A special store bought card would suffice. But if you feel the need to buy a gift then get something like a manicure, candy, a candle, or an ornament.
If I were someone's boss, I wouldn't expect a gift.

Yes, I know what you mean. I've had bosses like that and felt that I had to give them something, too. I liked that other person's suggestion to chip in with your fellow workers to get her something but it might be too late for that. I would get here a card and put some scratch tickets in it. It's not a personal gift, just something to show that you remembered her at Christmas.

You don't have to get anyone a present for Christmas--there's no hard and fast rule that says you must. :) If you want to get her one because you really like her and want to show your appreciation for her, then fine--I'd go with something small--maybe a nice bottle of wine or a pretty flower arrangement, etc. If you want to get her one just because she's your boss, but you don't really like her--forget it. Chances are she probably knows you don't really like her. And, since you really don't, picking out a gift for her will be difficult because you won't be buying from the heart.
I think most bosses don't really expect gifts from their employees.

I would probably buy a gift anyway, but not anything crazy. This is the type of situation where you buy a christmas themed mug and fill it with chocolates or coffees or teas and wrap it up in tissue paper or celophane or something... that type of thing. Just something small to show that you remember but you're not trying to suck up or anything. Merry Christmas:)

It's not really necessary, though the suggestion to get a card is a good one. I give you credit- I'd find it hard to respect someone I didn't like!

No, you are not supposed to give your boss a gift. However, a holiday card is appropriate!

** Check your emploee manual first; i work for the fed. Gov't and we are not allowed to give our supervisors any gifts (except special circumstances i.e., weddings, circumcisions, kids communions, etc.) This is because a gift is likened to a bribe.
Not allowing gifts up the chains avoids the appearance of impropriety.

I would say no.... I personally think it would be hard to buy for someone that I didn't like. You can give her a nice Christmas card and write a nice note inside. You didn't say if she was giving you anything?

I like my boss, and we exchange gifts for Yule. I usually give her something hand-made. I sometimes give her pottery I've made, but this year I'm making her jewelry. I usually give her something that's pretty small that she can put on her desk or hang up in the office.
