In fairness the question does have some basis when you consider the new passport rules. For example travel to and from Puerto Rico will require a passport to get back into "the states" even though Puerto Rico is an US territory.

So I can see someone thinking passports are needed if you leave the continental US for any distant destination including Hawaii.

I too believe the answer is no and will remain no. Nor do you need one to go to Alaska, the 49th state.

NO, Hawaii is part of the Unied States! When people say "back in the states" they are not remembering that Hawaii is part of the United States! If you are an American then, NO you do not need a passport!
(Srry. that's just a BIG pet peeve of mine)

You are aware that Hawaii is the 50th state of the US right? And do you need a passport to travel in the US? Think about it!

If you are flying from a US State to another US State you don't need it. Unless you are coming from a foreign country you would. Minnesota to Mexico to Hawaii you would need one. Minnesota to Hawaii you don't need one.

No, you are still in U.S. territory. Unless you are going out of the United States you don't need a passport. Hawaii may not be part of the continental U.S. but it is still part of the country!

a99blkdog doesn't seem to have done his homework. Hawaii is the 50th state ... and why would you need a passport to travel within the United States?

Puerto Rico is sometimes referred to as the 51st state, but that is a misnomer ... Puerto Rico, like Guam, The USVI and American Samoa is just a territory.

No...Hawaii is part of the U.S. You only need a passport to enter/exit another country.

Since you are from Minnesota I am not suprised that you would not know this. I bet you know how to fish, camp and drink beer. I can't belive that you are actually thinking of going to Hawaii and not camping on a lake near Brainerd or in the Iron Range.

No you don't need a passport!

Yeah, you customarily want a passport to get decrease back into the US... and as for the position you may get it, your perfect guess can be a courthouse. i'm rather particular you may also use your delivery certificates instead of a passport, yet that in effortless words works one time, so in case you flow out of usa again, you may get a passport. desire this helped!
