I stayed a couple times at a Doubletree Club Suites hotel in Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan. There is a PATH train station (Pavonia station) a block away from the Doubletree hotel. The PATH train is a subway service between NJ and NYC, and it runs to the World Trade Center and Herald Square, where Macy's is located. It's an easy walk from there to Madison Square Garden, the Empire State Building and most of mid-town Manhattan. Prices are much better at the Doubletree in Jersey City than it is at an equivalent hotel in NYC. The train ride is about 15 minutes.

Great low-budget things include walking along Canal Street in Chinatown on a Saturday or Sunday morning, riding the Staten Island Ferry, walking through Central Park, museums, great window shopping, and eating at the great coffee shops and delis. You can still get an excellent meal at very reasonable prices in NYC, including places like Little Italy and Chinatown.

You will have to pay a fairly steep price to skate at Rockefeller Center and the waiting line is usually awful. It's faster and cheaper to skate at Wollman Rink in Central Park.

Below is a link to a review I wrote of the Doubletree Club Suites hotel for Epinions.com.

If you can afford it, I just saw Tarzan. Expensive BUT soooo worth the money. A carriage ride around central park will cost you about $50.
