Filing back a tooth that sticks out has limitations. You don't want to breach the enamel layer or make your tooth too thin. Putting on a cap (crown) can also have the same limitations.
Sometimes it is better to build up the adjacent teeth with composite or porcelain veneers to make THEM in line with the protruded tooth.
You'll have to see your dentist for an assessment.

Well to be blunt, "gangsters" sometimes file their dogs teeth down to points, but not flat. The only instance where I've heard of a dogs teeth being filed down was in the case of a German Shepherd herder. Or rather, a herder that uses German Shepherds. He has his dogs teeth filed down so that when they bite to intimidate, they sheep still get the same affect, but can slip away and the skin isn't broken. He's not a trainer, he literally lives the life up in the mountains, with his sheep, and a german Shepherd side kick. I don't know how common this practice is though. It's more likely natural progression, how old is he? -Alika613

You'd need to talk to your dentist. They can "file" teeth down, but they generally don't like to do it because what they're filing off is the enamel of your tooth. Less enamel makes a tooth much more prone to cavities and a host of other problems that could cost thousands of dollars to fix. There are other options, such as capping that one tooth. WARNING: Caps can be very expensive -- think along the lines of $500.00 for starters, and a cap is usually considered cosmetic surgery, so it wouldn't be covered by your dental care policy.

Yep, I had 2 done -- one of my incisors was chipped & the dentist smoothed it off and then filed down the other one to make 'em even. It took seconds & didn't hurt a bit. Not sure how much it costs. If you're going for a checkup or something else anyway, he may just do it for free.

if it's longer than the other tooth, then yes, i had my 2 front teeth filed down to make them shorter and even. but if one is more forward than the other i don't think so because then they have to file the enamel, they won't do that. it's cheap to have your teeth filed down, my dentist actually did mine for free, but i think she normally charges $25 per tooth.

i am not sure how much it costs but i have had it done. one of my teeth used to stick down more and it affected my bite so the doc just filed it down and it made it even with all the others. it took about 25 seconds to do.
