I think a nice pair of black pants and a red sweater is nice. It should look put together, but casual. I guess, though, it depends on where the party is. Some are very fancy, and that would call for a suit, but if it's casual, you don't want to look overdressed.

I think a nice denim shirt, khaki pants and a casual tie look nice without looking too dressy. Depends on the level of retail, I guess.

Do you have a black suit at all? I've found the black suit to be my savior, and my male friends concur.

Don't go for novelty ties, please; those just say "I have no penis, and I golf to make up for it." I kid not.

If you don't have the suit, at least just wear black trousers that fit, black socks, black shoes, a nice and pressed white shirt, and if you have a tie, wear it properly. Otherwise, just do what you can, smile, shake hands, and act as if nothing is wrong.

I've gotten good deals from local thrift stores, but that takes time and patience.

If nothing else, please avoid colored or white socks with black shoes and trousers; that will hurt you more than you can imagine.
