I am suffering from depression and a friend recommended prozac. Anyone have any experience with this drug? Did it help you?

It saved my life after my first baby was born. It doesn't make you feel high or anything - just....capable of handling things, some how. I didn't have any side effects, either - it was truly a godsend. After a while, I went off it, but then suffered another depressive episode several eyars later and when I tried it the second time, it didn't work as well. I have been told that is fairly common, too - that once you have taken it for awhile, you build up sort of a tolerance that doesn't go away even if you stop taking it and then start again. So, I switched to Zoloft (also very effective). Both of them are SSRI's - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin is the "feel good" brain chemical, and by inhibiting your body's ability to reabsorb the amount of serotonin your body naturally produces, you have more of it floating around in your system. More serotonin = feeling better. Since prozac is one of the SSRI's that have been out on the market the longest, it is probably one of the safest and cheapest - it is available in generic form. Hope this makes sense/is helpful.

My dad was on that for years but it really helped him over some of the other medicictions he tried.
