The real St. Nicolas was a Turkish bishop who on hearing a local man did not have enough to have a dowry for his daughter. Nicolas left a purse of money at his door anonymously. Then again for his next daughter and on the third daughters time of marriage Nicolas did the same except this time the local man waited in hiding to see who the generous donate was. On finding the bishop he promised not to reveal his identity. Is that charitable enough?

Hmmm, the "synonymous" with Christmas part is the kicker. How many famous people are synonymous with Christmas? St. Nicholas. Scrooge. Maybe Bing Crosby; his golf tournament benefited charities, but I'm not sure he's really synonymous with Christmas. John Wesley, but again, not synonymous with Christmas, and outside Methodist churches probably not so famous. Maybe whoever founded the Salvation Army. Not an easy assignment.

What about St. Nicholas (the real person)? He was said to have given away his parents money he inherited to charity after their deaths, before he became a bishop. I don't think there's anything more Christmas than St. Nick.
