My HDTV Samsung 61inch has HDMI inputs/outputs. If my cable box has HDMI outputs as well, is my HDMI cable just going from my cable box to my TV (and not my receiver)? If I'm getting the HDMI quality video via my HDMI cable from my cable box to my TV, what would I be gaining by spending $300 more on a HDMI receiver - would it be JUST for the sound? Would my video already be covered? Thanks in advance
I care more about video than audio

The short answer is yes. The receiver would only be about the audio--a direct connection to your TV will suit you just fine video-wise.

Yes you would save some but later on down the line you might want those connection

Simply because it appears that most products will have an hdmi connector.

If you only plan on using 2 components and nothing else then sure why bother.

For connecting the sound all you need to do is run an optical or digital coax cable from the cable box and DVD and you should get equal sound to the HDMI.

You do not want to run sound out of the tv because that would be just stereo. The digital audio port on the tv does not send out anything unless the tv is using its built in tuner.

So basically what you will need is one HDMI and one digital audio cable either optical or digital coax and you are set.

In addition to buying the HDMI Receiver, you will most likely also have to purchase an additional HDMI cable to run to the receiver. The receiver would then connect to the TV. In many cases, you would have to turn the TV speakers off to get true surround sound. Another option would be to run speaker outputs from the TV to surround sound...cheaper and almost as clean in sound reproduction.

So if you care more for the video than audio,
do you wear earplugs when viewing a movie in a theater??
