They control a motor's speed through all phases of running, including start up, running speed, stopping speed as well as rotation (clockwise or counter clock wise). They accomplish this electronically (the A.C. drive for instance, changes the frequency of the source being supplied to the motor). Because it is electronic, it is efficient in it's use of energy, and because of it's ability to manipulate the motor, it maximizes the power used by the motor as well extending the usable life of that motor. An added benefit of it being electronic is that it can easily be made to interface with most plant operations' software.
