a standard size or a miniature size? Longhair, smooth, or wirehair? Why?

I prefer the Standard -- they're hardier, not as fragile. I have 3, as well as a pack of Siberian Huskies, and I don't have to worry about the Siberians accidentally injuring one of them.

Plus, I just like a bigger dog.

As far as coat type, I prefer the Longhairs. They're very pretty, and seem to be mellower than the Smooths and the more "terrier-like" Wires.

Dachshund are the best dog breed out there. We have a 1 year old Dachshund and he is the best dog I have ever had.

As for size, coat, and colors, it's all up to you. Mini's are great for small houses or apartments or for people who just love small dogs! Standards and Mini's have no difference in disposition, so either would be fine.

For coat, most people say that Longhair and Wirehair have more patience with kids, are scared less easily, and are friendlier. This can not always be the case. It's all on how you train your dog that affects it's behavior. We, personally, love the longhairs. But, all 3 can be good dogs.

Also, color is another thing to look at. Dachshunds have so many colors! You choose which one is best for you. We have a longhair, mini, red, and he is the best.

Hope I helped, do a little more research before you take anyones advice!

(remember, the dogs behavior is because of the humans training!)

Miniature with smooth hair. They're the cutest and the easiest on your house. The wirehair and the longhair shed like crazy.

Well, we have a longhair, black with brindle points, standard male. But the mini size tend to have less issues with their backs than the standard sizes. So on the basis of back issues, I think I'd do a mini. Definitely prefer the long hair as I think it's just beautiful. Most short hairs that I have known have been "moody" in disposition, but never have seen that in a long hair--ours is sweet as ever.

i would rather have standard size with smooth hair. longhair will just shed, wirehair i just dont like. Mini dachshunds are cute but they are just too small sometimes to me.

I would prefer the standard, as I prefer a dog with substance, and I think the long-coats are prettiest and calmest.
