My puppy was sick and we took him to the vet - he seems to have gotten better, but he's still not playing and running around like he usually does. How many days will it take for him to regain his strength and be normal?? Also - he was the smallest out of the litter, does that mean he's going to be a sickly dog??

We took him to the vet yesterday. She checked a stool sample, his temprature and a general check up. Everything was fine. She gave him some medicine to stop the dehydration and diarrhea. His stools were still a little loose yesterday, but MUCH better. I"m just worried as he's really dull.

Just do what the vet told you to do give him a few days to regain his strength. If he's not getting any better take him back to the vet. Our Shih-Tzu was the smallest puppy in his litter too and is 3 years old now and has been the picture of health. He's just very small and so darn cute!!!

Because he was the smallest don't mean that he will be sickly. Sometimes the smallest in a litter will grow to be as big or bigger than the other pups. My Shih-Tzu is not a puppy & he weighs 17 lbs. The vet said he wasn't overweight and that some Shih-Tzu's are bigger than others.
If Your puppy has diarrhea make sure he drinks plenty of water. Give him rice water in the place of water. That will be good for diarrhea & vomiting. Since he is a puppy make sure he eats several times a day to regain his strength and his stool should get back to normal. You can also give your puppy Pepto Bismol.Ask your vet " how much to give ?"

I have my own shih tzu that was the runt of the litter. He got REALLY sick a few years back (he wasn't eating or going to the bathroom) and they almost put him to sleep. The vet made me switch to Science Diet food and he's been great ever since. He doesn't play all the time, but I've found his most playful moments are right when I get home. Even though he isn't the most active of shih tzu's (I have another that is really active) he is still a great cuddler. Just be careful what you feed your dog, what he licks from your floor (ie. the cleaning supplies you use) and play with him when he's up to it.

Being the smallest does not mean he will be sickly, however, small dogs can be more vulnerable to certain things.
You didn't mention what your pup was diagnosed with. What did the vet test for? Sounds to me like he is still dehydrated and may need some subqutaneous fluids to get back to normal activity. How is his appetite?
If he is still feeling low, I would take him back to the vet. Also, is he up to date on his vaccinations?
Good Luck.

Sometimes the runt of the litter is not the most hardiest. Has he had any of his shots, how old is he?
You should have seen more improvement in him by now. I feel another visit to the vet is called for as it could be something more serious and other than what he was treated for initially. It also wouldn't hurt to take him to a different vet and get another opinion.
How many days ago did you take him to the vet?

I dont know where people are getting their info from???
Being a RUNT usually DOES mean a dog is going to be more sickly... they frequently have more problems...in the wild runt dogs are often abandoned by their mothers or they simply starve to death in a "survival of the fittest" situation...
Shih Tzu ( correct spelling ) are low energy dogs to begin with.. as opposed to high energy ones like Border Collies...
depending on why he was sick.. it can be a few days before he gets his strenght up

Be sure he is drinking plenty of water. Runt does not mean sickly. If he is not better in three days, or becomes worse, go back to the vet. Avoid feeding dogs any dairy products.

There's a good chance he is still feeling the effects and can be dehydrated. Make sure he's drinking a lot of water and eating well; if he has little to no appetite, you might need to feed him something light like chicken and rice.

I'd be dull too if I had the runs.
Feed him some red chili peppers and tabasco sauce- that will fire him up!
Or just dump him at a shelter. Who wants a runty ugly little hairy dog anyway?

Listen if its a bull dog than dont take him on long walks they just cant take the heat. But if its the regular dog like clollies & spanyals than take them on little dailywalks so the can get some exsirsize then they'll get used 2 it & be more active! & dont let bull dogs in the pool no mater wat.
